OMG...I did not even notice it when I posted some pix's earlier, but the little one is getting in the blue (though faded looking) patch on the back of it's head.

Another interesting thing about this little one is he is old enough to panic and scamper from the nest when my big old hand reaches into the cage. He sits still and gives me the look like "Now what!?" I take him from the nest, weigh him (33 grams today), then put him in another nest I'm working on to take a pix of, and he does not even try to escape and run away! The WB at this age would be taking off, and many a time I had to play hide and seek to find them.

DUH!!!...I was going to band today, forgot, plus I had only ordered 2010 bands and he is a 12/30/09 hatch. I pulled a couple little feathers but haven't got to the PO to mail them out today...first thing tomorrow.

I sure will :) Tommorow I want to try to offer him some tiny bits of fruit, and do a neck rub that most older mousebirds love :)

Thank you Carole! They want $3.99 per roll at the feed store! :omg:
------------------------------------------------------

You can also use some self adhesive stretchy bandaging material from the Drug store/Walgreens. Though I use none of that. I have some skinny tree beanches (from trees like Bottle Brush, and wide branch that is about 1.5-2" in diameter, so that they can rest their bellies on. Many mousebirds are 'Lounge Lizards' and like to hang out on flat platforms. They will use the thinner branches to hang from at night when sleeping.

I also learned from reading they eat dead bark. Which would explain why they are chewing on the stalks of the aloe plant, and have eaten most of the dried dead leaves. I may go out and find some dead paperback branches and put them in the cage. They would have fun chewing off the bark. I put some dried corn plant leaves in the WB cage and they played with them, nibbled on them, and another pair went to nest and added them to the nest.

These are incredible little birds! I am so happy you shared:)
--------------------------------------------

Thanks! They are very interesting to watch.

It is cold and rainy in south Florida. Sometimes I'll look and there are 6 adults piled up in the nest to keep the little baby warm :)

Since it is so damp I'll have to add some Fullers Earth dust to their sand dishes. This will help to absorb moisture from their skin from the dampness. Then in turn they can absorb some environmental excess humidity from the baby.

Carole...BRRR!...it is nasty and down to the low 40's, and DAMP! I had to go to Publix for supplies and it was so nice to have the heater on in the car. It is going to go down to the low 30's tonight, so Kirby is out hunting up small heater. I'm pulling all tiel babies in the nest because they can handle to cold, but not when it is as damp as it is outside.

The little BN mouser is doing good. They whole group will make sure that it stays warm. I can't wait till later to see how much it has grown and weighs :) It now has to have it's little head peeking out and watches everything that is going on around it. It is probably wondering what that weird looking giant creature is that is zipping by the cage and looking in :) It is calm and looks right back at me...LOL

Aww..that is cool! Sorry about the cold reaching you too. The power went out here for an hour or so and I started getting very worried. I have a thermometer in the bird room in the windowsill that read under 50F.:eek: Then I also have the fish to think about. It's amazing how much noise all the stuff in your home makes...it was dead silent,dark,and I ate crackers:rofl:{got nervous and blew the diet a little}

Down my way the power has been erratic too, and kicked off a couple of times. I also have him out looking for some little temp/humidity guages to put out. Mine have died...of all the times...grrr! I got the incubators on just in case. And added alot of bedding and moss to the botton of the BN cage just in case the baby decides to explore, he has a soft landing and the parents can pile on him and cover him up. I'll be keeping an eye on him all night...I'm glad I am a light sleeper and can do OK with a couple hours sleep a day.

Stay warm girl, and hope the power stays on for you.

Baby update :) The little one is now 11 days old, and 36 grams. it is very alert. The parents are great, and now the baby watches me and knows when it is 'human' time :) The parents will get off him, and when I have him out of the nest they keep it warm, move aside when I put the little one in and then cover and warm it up. Alot of the other single adults are also helping with keeping the little one well covered :)

Look at those big feet. The color is starting to show on them. I was going to band and forgot, maybe tommorow. And that little tail will start to rapidly grow out.

Thanks Carole...it is a very good, sweet baby:)

It's beak is starting to lose the little swellings on the sides of the lower beak. Soon the beak will look more like an adults beak in shape, excluding the red and black color that comes in several months from now.
