I have a GCC and I would love to harness train him so we can go for walks together. Getting him harness trained now seems like a good idea so that if for some reason I ever need to harness him he'll already be trained. I also want to do it while he's young, he's about 9 months now.
He doesn't like things over his head. I've been trying to play peekaboo with him and he hates it. I made him a little fall scarf just for fun but he won't let me put it on. He's not afraid of the scarf itself, he's afraid of me putting it over his head. So I realized I have a pretty big problem to solve if I ever hope to get him harness trained.
He loves getting scratches all around his face and neck so he's not uncomfortable with being touched there he just doesn't like things over his head.
I've been trying to traditionaly train him, put the scarf over his head and hold a treat so he has to go under the scarf to get it. He does well with this for a while but he will usually start biting either my hand holding the scarf or my hand offering the treat so I end the session because I don't want him associating the treats with biting.
Obviously I don't need him to wear this scarf but I thought if I continue to train him with it it might help with his future harness training.
I'm not sure where to go from here. Should I forget the scarf and just get the harness to work with? (I haven't ordered it yet). Should I train him with something like peekaboo first to help get him comfortable with things over his head?
Any tips are appreciated!
