Welcome! Unfortunately, without letters I can not see how anyone would be able to help.

Are there no directories at all for bird bands?

A parakeet was found with a leg band with PET US1 67073. Trying to locate an owner without a database is nearly impossible. Thank you for your time.

You could also try looking for lost pet ads on websites such as Facebook or Craigslist.

No not, really.

Nothing like microchips for dogs and cats... which birds can be microchipped as well! Just, not many birds, especially *small* birds, get microchipped....

There used to be a lot more websites in regards to finding breeder information from bands... however, the band wont help you find the owner since it's registered to the breeder (or, in some cases, the importer). The only way it would help is if the owner could tell you the info off the band, assuming that you are able to make contact with them.

Many birds don't have bands so pictures of birds and any specific quirks that the bird does or words that they say is going to be more helpful.

Hi! I have a question regarding banding. Not sure where to ask it and as I saw your post (cool to have that info, btw) I thought I’d put it out here?

I’m wondering if bands are mandatory, or if they can be removed? I ask on behalf of my little Budgie who is becoming obsessed with his band. He keeps trying to bite it! He is only 5 months so I don’t think he’s outgrown it, it doesn’t look too tight. But he spends a great deal of time working at it!

I have been trying to redirect his attention when I see him at it. I’ll offer a treat or a paper shred to pick at. But that only goes so far. I’d like to take it off but am unsure if it is illegal to do so, or I’ll advised?

Thanks for letting me ask and if there’s a better place to post, please let me know ok? Cheers!

Yes, they are not required and can be removed. In fact, many people prefer to remove leg bands, because they can pose a safety hazard. Some birds have died due to leg bands getting caught on toys or cage wires.

The leg bands are primarily used by breeders or owners of multiple parrots to track the identity of individual birds. They can also provide a little info about where your bird came from if you adopt a rescue. However, you don't need to keep a leg band if it is bothering you or your bird.

Contact your vet. They should be able to safely remove the leg band. It is generally not recommended to do it yourself, since you might injure the bird's foot or leg if you don't have the right tools.

The only time they are required is if you plan on taking them into a new country, or if you have a species that is subject to CITES laws and they aren't microchipped.

Well, I rescued a Grey a few months ago. I was told he was 3, vet says older than 10. I reached out to who I believe the breeder may be... (WS NYS) no response yet, and I find out from reviews of this store that they buy older parrots and then rebrand them as younger. The ID’s are completely protected between the breeder and store to not have any real identifiers. Maybe that’s why all the databases are disappearing! Massive corruption going on here. People want to be able to sell African Greys, Cockatoos, and Macaws for ridiculous prices, need them to be younger!

I’m kind of grossed out. I will never know his real age!

Welcome to the forum.

I don't know the real age for two of my birds.

That's pretty common for re-homed birds, and why many of us celebrate a, "gotcha day", rather than a hatch day.

I hope you're able to trace the band to find the information you're looking for.

There never really was a central database for leg bands. Why, I don't know. They are mostly to track sales.

As for swapping out bands, does your parrot have an open leg band? Closed leg bands can only be put on when the bird is a baby, so they would need to cut off the old band and put on a new one, which seems crazy since many bands don't list the year anyways.

Small breeders are less likely to have years on the band as they would have to buy new bands every year and that's an added expense a lot don't want to deal with.

Can anyone help me figure out where my umbrella cockatoo was from. Tried searching multiple times no luck, she’s got a silver closed band that reads
# NMA 5852
She was from a rescue got her back in 2011 or 2012 they said they thought she was 15 at the time.

I’m looking for some help! I rescued a cherry headed conure who is approx 28 years old. I’m trying to find the breeder but the band initials aren’t on the list. Her band reads FL BEB 20. I gather they’re in Florida. Any ideas on the breeder? Thank you!!

Possibly Beverly's Exotic Birds in Florida.

hi,
i have a bird with the same leg band numbers as you posted back in 2017. I since tried the number that was given for Parrots Aplenty and it is no longer in service. I would love to know more information on my Guy....do you happen to still keep in touch with her? his band is PAPL 422

thank you

Hi!
Yes it was aplenty parrot aviaries. The lady did provide my.husband with a hatch date as well.

QUOTE="SpecialistElbru, post: 2604035, member: 15935"]Which breeder was it? Was it Parrots Aplenty? If you have verified information we would like to add it to the main list.

Did you get a hatch date? Even if under 40, I would like to confirm or deny my hunch on a now-so new band.

Edit: grammer/ fixed bad cut&past

Sure wish this woman was still in business, my bird comes from there.....
A lot of bird breeders from 10+ years ago are sadly no longer in business.
