Here s/he is this morning, my little sweetie!
Don't be fooled by that closed foot, Adélie has quite the grip with it,
IMG_20190309_133216.jpg
I couldn't get my hair back!
And when I tried pulling it away, Adélie grabs it with the other foot... IMG_20190309_133229.jpg

If I could boil water then yes I could, no problem. No point buying something now, otherwise I would have looked for something...
I have never hand fed a chick for this long I think maximum has been 5-6 weeks after parents have done a month...

Thanks @Dona they are my family.

I´ve always thought of myself as a dog person. I´ve always had dogs around me, and never thought that there could be a day where I won´t have a dog in my family.
But over the years with my birds, I´ve have changed how I am labelling myself. I know that when the dreaded day comes and I lose my beloved Jacob, it will destroy me. And I can´t imagine bringing another dog into my home. I just don´t see it happening. I feel like, that will be when my life shifts, and I will probably only ever have birds in my home. ❤
Your baby is cuter than cute.... totally adorable, you can’t let that baby go!! Like you I am really a dog person and have birds by default. If someone had told me 12 months ago I would have birds I would have laughed a lot and thought that was ridiculous, however here I find myself with now rescue dogs and birds. I love my birds as much as my dogs. 4 dogs and 8 birds and trying not to have any more of either lol !!!!

Just rolling into day 74

I wonder if this will reach 100 days... He´s still taking 3 feeds.

Thanks guys, Adelie truly is the sweetest.
S/he´s been climbing all over my face, and is now having a little snooze on my shoulder.
Breakfast is now quite the shenanigan. I keep meaning to try film us, but I´m so zombie I forget

Just about to do feed number 3 on day 80... My boyfriend says Adelie will eat baby food for life

Also, I checked Adelies pelvic bones, and it appears she´s a she.
I can´t be 100% as still young plus it´s not a foolproof method. But I will take it as a good indicator (better than blatant guessing) and from now on, going forward, I´ll refer to Adelie as She. I´ll check back when she´s 6 months old +/-
@Eloy called it :fairy2:

Adelies new cage should be arriving this week, she´s still living in the little temp setup I made to observe her closed foot and perching etc.
The new cage is only as tall as the little one she´s in now, which is plenty for Adelie, but it is wider. so she´ll be able to run and play with the ball.

:kickcan:I'm sure she'll do a lot more than that in there. What cage did you get her?

I got her a 75*46*46.
fin.jpg

So it won´t be very tall but it´s quite long, and Adelie is a rather small lovebird so it will be good for her.
I´ll post a picture when it turns up and it´s been washed and set up.
When we move house in the not too distant future I´ll probably import her something a little more heave duty like my montana cage, but this will do for now.

She´s been enjoying pushing the kitty ball around for the last week or so, so hopefully she´ll enjoy having the extra floor space. She´s in a 45*35*50 atm so she´s about to gain 40 cm2.

Minimum size for a lovebird is 45*45*45.. so the cage she´s in now falls short 10 cm. And that´s a large cage here in Spain :(

I´m looking forward to getting her settled in :)

I'm sure she'll love it. I also like the idea of a heavier cage after the move. It's like her home is developing as she grows. More space, more toys :bounce8:

Not sure how confident you are about dyi stuff, but you if it is hard to find things in Spain you might be able to build something. I like building things.. but I know it can be intimidating at first. I learned a lot about craftmenship from watching, asking questions and listening. Great craftspeople are normally more than satisfied with offering a helping hand or sound advice.

In Danmark we had a Center for kunst- og kulturproduktion.. I miss that place so much. We had access to everything from laser cutters, woodworking shop and book making. In Australia everyone seems obsessed with buying all their own tools. There is less of a community sharing vibe in my area.

Spain may have some community production facilities. dyi does not mean it will be kitsch. :)

I like that. It will be perfect for her. :)

This is the first time here that I got such a strong feeling that Adelie was a she.
Congrats to an adorable little lady ♥ that hopefully soon is weaned. :D

I loved that video, their is your heartbird that never will let you go. ♥

I wonder,, because of that "trauma" when her parents refuse to feed her, and you stepping in, made her to addicted and afraid to lose you.
So that's why she still begs for food. She need the act more then the food? And also she don't like other birds because that remind her of negative things, and so far other birds hasn't giving her anything she needs at all. (only the opposite)
Just a theory..

That´s very interesting.
I know that some lone birds can be like this when introduced to other birds as they don´t recognise themselves as birds. But Adelie has grown up with the other birds. Everyone is in the living room, and the elders come over during flight time to check out the new thing in the room.
Adelie was fine when she was with Blue, I´m even feeling a bit guilty now for not keeping that bird!
Even very small, Adelie would take on her mum.

Here are my flock dynamics:

This shows how the bird on the left reacts towards the bird on the right.
Aldora, Lapis and Adelie are all female, Nube and Jaime are males, Sydney is androgynous.

ff.png

Red=Standing ground and attacking if someone gets too close, and staying put if attacked and retaliating. Requires intervention.
Blue=will fly away if the other is giving the warning signs of a bite
Green= there´s a love bond, but will fly away if squabble
Big problems occur when there are red lines going both ways for two birds. If I leave them together they won´t stop.

As you can see, Adelie will stand her ground and attack everyone, the problem is Lapis and Nube do the same, meaning, I have to be there to stop it.
I still let Adelie out with the flock for a bit. But I have to focus on her, meaning I´m not focused on Adlora and Sydney.

The grey is undetermined. But I think Aldora will have a red line. I can´t imagine her flying away if attacked by Adelie.

Here is the same chart but I´ve taken away adelies red lines:
ffade.png
A huge difference. This is how our flock was - very managable. The unit worked well. The only issue was Aldora and Syndey. So I would keep my eye primarily on them.
The blue team are pretty solid, and never create any problems amongst themselves.

I´m really hoping something improves with Adelie and the flock, Even if she just flew away if attacked or stopped attacking others.

The other day she flew up where Lapis was sat on top of my tall cabinet and tried to land on her and attack her. It´s the only place I can´t reach so I had to bang the cabinet to avoid a fight. Something I didn´t want to do as I had Aldora close to me :( Lapis wasn´t anywhere near me nor had been that day ´til that point so it couldn´t be jelousy.. I just don´t get why Adelie would fly (flutter) 2-3 metres away to attack Lapis for nothing.

There´s so much conflict around her. Not just that she attacks everyone, but most will attack her.
Her flight still isn´t great so I let her out for about an hour then put her in her cage.

Maybe when she´s mastered her flight and is weaned things will change... I really don´t know.

It will. And when she is older you can learn them all who is in charge.
I have learn Eliy that to attack Akela only means less love from me and more if she is kind to her.
I just don´t get why Adelie would fly (flutter) 2-3 metres away to attack Lapis for nothing.
She is jealous. She don't want to share you, and she also can do it to protect you as she consider other birds as mean/don't like them/are afraid of them.
There´s so much conflict around her. Not just that she attacks everyone, but most will attack her.
That is because she is different and don't behave like a bird should do. They probably also feels her uncertainty and that is often giving wrong signals to a balanced flock.

Once she is weaned, it will be easier to make her more independent and learning that she not is suppose to have you near 24/7.
That will make her seek for others company, and she will be learning the way to act in a flock.

I did think it could be jelousy, but Lapis was nowhere near me and hadn´t been near me apart from me getting her out the cage. So I don´t know. Maybe.

This is what I am hoping. :)
I stopped having Adelie out so much a couple of weeks ago. I don´t want to encourage the attachment so she is in her cage apart from food times and when the whole flock is out, I am watching her and close by.

With Lapis and Nube it was easy adding the to the flock as they were loved and loved 2/3 of my birds. When they were flying, their mum still loved them and the four would fly together everywhere and never separate. Now sometimes one or two will come away from the flock, but they usually fly together, even though the mum has ¨lost the love¨ for her chicks - as you can see in the chart.

Today is day 82,
41 days ago I created this thread, and I thought I was going cuckoo then

@Ripshod The cage turned up early. I don´t like it. Maybe I´m just picky. Size is good though. When I get it washed and Adelie in it after some food I´ll post a pic :)
