Plucking or molting???

I might have missed this in the thread, but have you had labs run on her? It seems unusual for a parrotlet to mutilate this severely. Assuming infections have been ruled out and treated if applicable?

My GCC has been through two plucking incidents (10 years apart). Both seemed to be due to bacterial skin infections, as he cleared up with antibiotics.

As she heals, keep her distracted and BUSY. Lot of extra shredding toys, foraging if you can get her to do it. My go-to's for my GCC are sola balls with seeds and favorite treats pushed into or in-between pods and paper lunch bags with shredded paper and his favorite "junk food" treats. For the bag you will have to punch/tear a few holes in it and tuck treats right into the opening so that she knows what it is.

Thanks for the update. Have you taken her to more than one vet, or has your vet consulted with their colleagues on this case?

In my personal experience it’s helpful to have multiple opinions on a difficult case.

I think just having a culture and sensitivity is loads better than trying different antibiotics. I hope for things to get much better for this little bird.
If this doesn’t work then consider another opinion. Right now you are learning exactly what you need to do.

Definitely yes if that hasn’t been done.

My GCC was plucking pretty severely when he went on Baytril and it fixed him right up.

I know what you’re dealing with is more severe but take heart - there’s a good chance it will get better if you can find the right treatment.

I saw above that yeast might be a concern too. Very common to have a swing towards fungal infection after antibiotics, especially if she’s been through several rounds.

For healing, keep her beak busy! Lots and lots of shredding, chewing, foraging materials. I know it’s helped mine a lot.

When my Lucy was casted and couldn’t pick at her bandages, I hung little chewy tails of surgical tape all around the sides of her carrier. She could hardly move without running into something else to chew.
I would try tying or taping chew toys up all over. Use whatever your bird likes to chew on. And maybe you can try some new things, too. This kept Lucy so busy she didn’t worry her casted leg or her bandaged foot.

No we have not changes clinic, but we got a new vet , she is one of the best vets in my country, and yes there were colleges that was with her,so i lay my trust in their hands, i think it was great to give her a better collar this time, but it is the same clinic but a diffrent vet so i would call it a second opinion, ive called the clinic if they got the lab results but it should come anytime soon they said. My parrotlet Thelma is doing good and acts normal, no bitning on her wound becuase of a better collar, i just hope we find the dumb thing that cuased her to destroy her skin like that, poor little girl. Ive not heard what a yeast infection is, is that also a type of skin concern in birds?

I’m glad you’ve had more than one vet look at her - best to put more heads together

Yeast or other fungal are possible - I thought you mentioned that above? Or did I misunderstand?

she is adorable and I’m so glad she is doing better!

I think they only mentioned fungal or other type of bacteria. Small birds are more prone to fungal infections, so No matter what the test says she will have the right treatment for it!

I think that sounds reasonable but I’d call the vet and ask.

I’m so glad she’s doing better. That wound was a bit scary looking.

I just saw my birds whole scab is on the floor, and she could not pick at it, does that mean it is healed?
