So you're thinking right now that it's a skin problem that he picked at?
Vet suspects dermatitis - that is what he said today...
I just hope there are no lasting side effects - mainly plucking.

Back to the vet tomorrow evening. I don't think he has been picking, if you look at him without moving the feathers, you would never know..

We're home from the vet.

Vet says he's getting better but have profound dermatitis. The infected area is getting smaller.

Nube got sprayed with the antibioti spray again.
I got some more itraconazole (anti-fungal) which he is to carry on taking twice a day (a drop per time, 0.05ml)
More metacam (I called it antiinflamitory before, because I wasn´t sure the name, but it is indeed metcam). One dose per day 0.05ml.
We have to continue the antibiotic drops twice per day, I have lots in the fridge left.
The vet gave me a weird fat. It is orange, and I noticed it stained his fingers. He told me to smuch a half chickpea amount (pea sized amount) into some seeds for Nube to eat once per day. I wrote down what the jar said ¨Vitavet Omega¨, looking now it is ¨100% virgen extra red palm oil¨
I found it here, I couldn´t find many English links: VITAVET OMEGA 325 ML

He also got a Vitamin (A?) injection.

I am really worrying over the feather picking aspect to this. I´m having to watch over him 24/7.

IMG_20200727_181300.jpg I noticed I could see a bals spot while we were waiting to see the vet..

IMG_20200727_184406.jpg after the spray..

IMG_20200727_190555.jpg the fatty stuff - it melted a little on the way home..

Just now seeing this and so glad things are going well for little Nube. They. Are. So. CUTE.

I know we all want to beat ourselves up and somehow be at fault but he y what are you superwoman? Eyes not only in the back of your head but on all birds at the same time??? Sorry we are only human. I had something happen a few months ago I blamed myself, I'd turned my back and a bird got a bite. But you know what, we can't do it all.

You're a great birdie mama and you did all the right things when you *did* see the injury.

I give mine red palm oil fairly often. At my house it is about 1/2 melted all the time. It's controversial but supposed to be good for them and I like to err on the side of caution so - they get it.

Sounds like a great vet and good meds, precautions against fungal growth and something for pain. Your baby should be well in no time!

Thanks Tanya :)

Sounds like a great vet
He´s wonderful!
I mentioned somewehre in this thread, that he is the same vet who was the only person to even look at Pepper (the injured dove chick that landed on my balcony), and he delayed all other appointments so he could perform emergency surgery to fix the hole in his crop.
I´m very pleased to have found such a good vet.

Today he asked to take Nube in the back to tend to him because it was busier and couldn´t close the window. Which I said was fine. When he came back, he said, ¨wow he´s such a good bird¨. He really is, nevever would he ever bite no one... well, apart from the other birds

My bird has had Palm Oil for 20 years now. It is full of Omega 3 and Vitamin A and carotene. The fat in it is over 1/2 non-saturated, so that is not a worry. Many of the member here use Red Pa;m Oil - you can give it to all of your birds.

Here is an article by Dr. Greg Harrison ( Harrison's food ) that tells you all about It.

I have seen it mentioned around AA. But I had never thought of giving it to my birds before. The vet seems to really stand behind giving a little bit, and knowing a lot of folks here use it too is reassuring :)
Thanks for the link, I´ll have a read.

And just wait until you see what it does for the quality of their feathers and fur. Every notice how Sarah's birds all shine like a new penny and have luxurious feathers? That's because of besides and excellent diet they get RPO (Red Palm Oil) regularly.

Yes to Organic RPO! My fids get a little bit of it every day.

Am I right in thinking that Harrisons recommend mixing red palm oil in with their pellets? It's odd because the place I order them from attaches a separate note (in German, so not originally on the package) saying to mix with rpo.

Harrison's pellets have a little RPO in them already. That's probably just a way to feed it. Hank would eat it enthusiastically straight and Jasper would for a long time, but has backed off on that. She gets .5cc of RPO daily by syringe. You can mix it with anything you feed them.

I´m curious.. in the link, it said they ran a trial on humans, then went on about cholesterol.. I wonder if did anything for human skin...

@Zara NO!!!! It turns everything and you into bright orange. It does not wash off of you or out of your clothes. Everything I own has orange spots on it.

@Ali That's easy - most RPO is raised in South America, Africa or India - no Orangutans
