Hi! I'm new here, and I'm getting a hand raised cockatiel for the first time! This is my second cockatiel, the first one I had was untamed (R.I.P. Señor, he was sick:darkcloud:). Does anyone have any advice for a new bird owner? (I bought THIS cage and natural perches to go with it, plenty of toys too)

Welcome to the Avenue! And congratulations on your new baby. When are you bringing them home?

The best advice I can give is to always keep learning. No matter if you’re new to birds or have been caring for them for many years, there’s always a benefit in broadening your knowledge for the animals in our care.

And we’ve lucked out with this forum! AA is jam packed with experienced people who are more than willing to share their stories and advice. It’s a real gem, so welcome aboard!

Welcome to the Avenue Ella! 1.welcome signs.gif

Does anyone have any advice for a new bird owner?
1. Take the bird for a check up with a vet as early as possible to be sure they are healthy and disease free.
2. Remember, hand raised doesn´t guarantee the bird will be your best bud from day one, trust still needs to be earned.

That´s a nice spacious cage :)
Congratulations :starshower:

Welcome to the forum! I think it's important to make sure your tiel is fully weaned before bringing him home. And even then, cockatiels sometimes regress under the stress of a new home and need hand feedings. So it's important to make sure he's eating okay and keep an eye on his weight. Also, ask what the breeder is feeding and continue to feed the same food for now. You can adjust the diet/food to what you want after the new tiel settles in.

And ask what formula they fed, even ask for a few spoonfulls, they may just give you some. That way if the chick does beg for a feed, you can offer some formula on a small spoon :)

Yay! Tiels are so sweet. I was originally planning to get a tiel but I have MCAS and was paranoid about the dander. So I love seeing everybody else’s so I can live vicariously. Congrats on your baby!

And what a lovely cage.
