Hi all.

I am new, my name is Jodie and I share my life with 6 wonderful personalities...6 budgies. We have 9 year old Bailey-Blue (a YF2 sky blue opaline.) , almost 9 year old Lumina (Normal light green), Lumina's 7 year old offspring Toshi (normal recessive pied) & Oushi (normal light green) 2.5 year old Little Rock (DF dom pied, YF mauve) & finally 7month old DC (DF YF2 dom pied)

I am joining mainly because about three days ago Little Rock had a fall which has left her quite injured, I am a little lost and have people who are being understanding of my emotions and other who are not so. I need help and a place to find my bird fix.

Initially I thought she'd broken her foot after a trip to the vet that same day we discovered it was not broken however she had no feeling or response to pain, no grasping response. So she was put in a splint for a few days to see if it helped, after two days the splint is now off...but she regained nothing and is returning to the vets once more as I suspect she's lost blood supply to her foot and I am frankly terrified of the outcome...

Updates will come as soon as I have more information, for now hello from myself and my little flock. (Also apologies if I have posted wrong.)

Welcome to AA! :welcome2:

Your flock is absolutely stunning, love their colors.
I'm sorry to hear about Little Rock, and I hope you find some answers soon for her leg. We have many knowledgable members who are experienced with special needs birds, if Little Rock may need help in the future.

She's in my prayers, and sending you plenty of hugs.:hug8:

Thank you so much! I am very proud of them all, I also do hope we find something soon. She deserves only the best. Thank you so much for your kindness. :)

Thank you!
I mean she seems all right in herself, she's bright eye'd eating, active (as she can be with one leg) even flying about. However something is not right.

Sadly, it's not that unusual for budgies to develop tumors that can press on nerves. This might be the case, especially since the vet couldn't find anything wrong with her leg itself and she doesn't seem to be in pain. The tumors they are most prone too are lipomas, which are benign, but still dangerous in such a small bird.
You may want to take her to another vet for a second opinion and see if they can recommend anything. If it is a tumor, they might be able to tell you if it's operable. Very often they aren't operable because removal would leave too large of a wound (birds' skin is thinner than mammals' and harder to stretch over a wound).
Sometimes an improvement in diet can shrink a tumor a little bit.

welcome to AA! your budgies are adorable. I agree with karen. could be a tumor and also an egg could put pressure on the nerve and cause paralysis

Welcome to the Avenue!

I'm sorry to hear about Little Rock's ordeal. If there is no sensation in the leg at all then sometimes the best course of action is amputation. Sometimes the risks of having a bum leg (like potential breaks, wounds, etc) can be greater than surgery to remove it. It sounds drastic and may be terrifying, but most animals do remarkably well even with such disabilities. There are a lot of resources available (both here and elsewhere online) to help with arranging the cage for disabled birds.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this. I don't think there's anyone here that wouldn't be upset, so you're in good company here.

Welcome to AA. Sorry about Little Rock and hope the problem can be resolved. Could be a tumor or could possibly be nerve damage from the fall.

Hi all.

After being referred to a specialist yesterday, Little Rock had her amputation early this morning. She has now come home and is wide eyed, looking perky. She even munched on some food on the journey home. It was also decided because of there was an infection in her foot/toes the entire leg had to be removed to catch up with it and hopefully get rid of it entirely. After a very long and anxious time, Little Rock is home and seems well of course it'll be a while till I am at rest. I will be sleeping in the same room as her for a while as I have been the last week. She is a strong little girl though.
Thank you all for what you have done in terms of support for us.

Excuse the different floorings. One is before I changed her lining.

I'm glad you stuck to your intuitions that something was still not right!! Often times, birds in general learn to get around without issues and act like they are still fully capable of life as if it never changed! Little Rock will adjust but to help her out a bit I would recommend getting several types of platform perches and the rope perches (which I say you have) are good so she can get her grip on them. I have a love bird with a splayed leg and she has several platforms and rope perches to help her stand better. Platforms also allow them to rest their leg that doing all the work now.

This perch is great to use. I also made fleece covers to slip on them for Pickles to be able to land easier and rest when needed. The covers easily slip off for cleaning.

Many of our genders here have awesome platforms (even for the littles)! Check them out in the MarketPlace under the Forum tab!

Thank you so much @Beanurita for such a detailed help, I really appreciate it. I will also definitely need it. ATM I have a temporary shelf (Made of card I know it's not ideal but its all I had) clipped on with bulldog clips with a thick fleece lining and paper towel on top of it, then that plastic perch is there as an option but I will get her some rope ones I have non free ATM.
She has food and water on both levels as well.

Your welcome!!! If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!!

It's good that Little Rock is alert and wake! Keep her food and water assessable on the floor and when she starts moving up more add more bowls while keeping it on the bottom. Millet would be good while healing to bribe her to eat more right now too....especially if she isn't eating much at the moment!

Keep us posted on Little Rock's progress!!

@Beanurita I am in the UK.
She does have millet and two bowls of seed, tomorrow I am going to offer some egg food, just to see.
Also she is seeming to prefer the shelf than the floor atm. Also flaps about a lot when I cover her so she has to have a small peak space I guess she feels more secure that way but I worry about a draft catching her.

I will be keeping you updated. Thank you again for your help.

Update: March 16th.
Little Rock has eaten seed from her dish today! (not just millet, the sunflower seeds are just as a temptation she doesn't get them all the time...in fact rarely because I know they are fatty) Which I am pleased about, also caught her perching/climbing to the top of the cage again (Which I worry is too much too soon.) Also I don't like Mirrors either but they are in as a distraction from picking at anything. That is it for the update her wound looks good and no problems to report.

I am also doing research into one a different cage for her and a set up, but I do need to raise the funds for it.
Thank you from Jodie & Little Rock. :budgie10:

So she keeps on perching so DC had to give up one of his perches traded for a natural branch, so Little Rock could have a rope one instead, its wider so she is a bit wobbly but she hasn't gotten off of it since I put it in almost.
