The last couple of weeks I've been frazzled because I only find the banana-shaped pieces from his pellet in his water dish. (Of course the rest are on the floor and everywhere but being digested.) So I sat and watched him a few days ago. I would pretend to type on my computer and I'd look over. He buries his face in his dish (flipping seed and pellets everywhere) and grabs up a single banana-shaped pellet. He maneuvers his way across the cage to his water dish and dips into the dish for a drink. He then eats the banana piece that was in his mouth that is now soft enough to chew. He eats the other pellets and seeds just fine? Nothing's wrong with his beak, he just prefers the bananas as nature intended - soft. What a little goober!
