UPDATE 4: He went back for his check up, it's going away, but it turns out that "sore" on his other foot is also bumblefoot :'( So that was tended to today, going back in another 5 days.

How's it going with your budgie?

So the foot that had bumblefoot initially is still the same, it started getting better, then got worse again, but the foot that I thought was a sore that also turned out to be bumblefoot is nearly completely healed.

He's going back to the vets on Wednesday, but I do worry about the stress of all of this, he's separated from his friend and I have to grab him twice a day every day and it's not very nice :( His flight feathers are also dirty because I can't clean them (he won't let me) and he's never been one to use the baths I supply. I might get a spray bottle, but I think they're cruel, but he'll have dirty, bloodstained feathers otherwise, which is probably no good.

Otherwise, he seems okay, he's chirping and playing with the toys that I've put in the cage and eating and drinking the same as before, so I don't think the grabbing is doing too much harm at present. He's even escaped my grasp a few times and flown around, so he's still got energy.

It's only cruel if used improperly. Getting pets accustomed to anything new should be done and reward for the desired response, even if that response is no response at all.
I'll try and give it a go then, I hope he doesn't freak out when I start spraying :S

Start very slow, let the mist come down from above and barely land on him. Don't spray directly, that would likely not go well.
Yeah, absolutely I don't want to spray him in the face, poor baby :S

He went to the vets again today and his foot needed opening up again to get rid of all the puss and there was yet more blood but I just covered him up after that, it must have been horrible for him, so I'll try to clean him up tomorrow. Admittedly, I still haven't got the bottle because I managed to find an old spray bottle, but the mechanism is broken :'( I'll get a new one at the weekend I think now. He's not massively dirty, but his wings have a bit of blood on them and I don't like his lovely white feathers looking sad and dirty.

Poor baby! Hope his foot gets better. That sounds rough for the both of you!

With bumblefoot in parrots, does it form a sort of core inside the infection, such as with chickens?

Also I've heard of others with budgies giving them wet leafy greens for them to rub against and bathe that way. Perhaps that is something to try.

Yeah it does, the same as chickens. My vet is an avian specialist so he knows what he's doing, but it's meant he's had to have his feet opened up three times now, must be pretty painful for him because 2 of the times he was conscious.

I could give it a try, I do supply a bath, but he just drinks from it lol

UPDATE: He recovered just fine, took until last week for him to go back in with his friend but now both his feet have healed up nicely so no more grabbing twice daily and he's free to come/go to/from the cage whenever now. :bliss:

Yeah, when I was treating him I was worried it would be a long recovery time, grabbing him twice a day for like 8 months would have been horrible, good job it was only like a month and a bit.
