I made a rash decision and now I need advice

I was at a flea market today and I saw a poor Quaker Parrot who had had two toes bit off half his beak is split wide and he was being bullied by two other in their cage. I asked the man to move him and he muttered something about drowning him... (Wouldn't repeat it for me) I snapped I spent this month's grocery money to bring him home. He is supposedly three months old I don't know how I'd know and in rough shape. He has done nothing but sleep the four hours since we came home. His only vocalization has been to let out a slight sqwak every few minutes. I think he may be sick and now I don't know what to do with him. I have him as far from my Nico as I can get him but am still worried sick I may have screwed things up more. I am not even sure I can come up with more money than enough for a vet exam and I am sure his beak will need work. I hope like hell he isn't sick too but I wonder. I know it was a bad decision but I was terrified this horriblehman would drown him and he is sooooo adorable. Just not sure what to do now. The decision to buy him came easy. How to keep him is next.

You did a very kind thing getting that Quaker away from that horrible person. Best thing to do is take the bird to the vet for an exam and be sure to quarantine as far away as possible from Nico. Also when you go from one bird to the other change clothes or wear a cover up that you remove and also wash thoroughly. I hope things work out.
You may have to apply for Care Credit if you don't have the $$ or just put the cost on whatever plastic you have.

Wow. God bless you for your kind heart. I would have done the same. What a shame that man wasn't kind enough to just give the poor bird to you. You did the right thing getting it out of the situation it was in. He or she, will definitely need to see a vet. Explain the situation to them and they may reduce the bill and if you have to, to make sure it's taken care of, give it to the vet if they will take it. Maybe a tech will give it a home and the treatment it needs.

Thank you for taking this poor soul in. His beak looks as if it has been injured and split the length of the beak. Does it appear as if there is any infection at the top of the beak. If it appears like there is, try cleaning it with a Qtip and warm water - clean it well. Then put a tiny bit of multi-antibiotic salve on the open part. That is about all you can do.

Is he underweight? Is he eating and drinking? It is most important that he eats and drinks and stays very warm. Once he has had some supportive care and rest you will be more able to determine if he is ill.

He does needs a vet.

You could also bring him to a parrot rescue if you want. You did a wonderful thing and they could take him to a vet and get him adopted if you are worried about your other bird. What ever you do, this little guys life has been changed for the better!

He has been eating and drinking. The beak...gosh it's bad it is split from his nostril all the way down an there is a gap of about three millimeters. Quite sizeable for such a small beak. I think there is new growth behind it but I know to be sure he absolutely needs a vet. I am going to borrow the money even if I have to do a payday loan. I can't let him suffer if he is in pain and like I said he is missing toes so I'd like his feet examined as well since I read that the dark I see in his beak and feet is bruising I have actually thought about calling a parrot rescue as I have no idea how to handle an untamed bird but I hope with time and love and if he doesn't break the bank I don't have to burden the rescue with another bird. He is not unwanted I just fear he won't get the best care with me.

Some vets have a charity account that emergency/rescue cases can utilize in such cases. Your best bet is to find a good vet, let them know the gravity of the situation and your financial constraints. Call around, send pictures to email address if you need to.

Also, could you post your general location? There may be users nearby that can pitch in to help with resources or know local vets/rescues that can help.

Thank you so much for getting this bird out of that horrible situation... I hope it works out so that you can be his or her caretaker, but even if it doesn't, just know that you have absolutely saved this bird.

I have used Care Credit before, and it is very helpful. Even if you need the credit line raised, it is very easy to do. It is also very easy to sign up. The main thing is making sure that you can pay it off within the amount of time given - if you let it get longer than that and starting dealing with the high interest rate, then it could be stressful and problematic. So long as you have a budget plan going into it, it is a really great resource. I recommend it.

Thank you everyone for your ideas. Actually I am in Ontario Canada. I am going to find all of this man's ads on Kijiji and stuff and ask them to stop allowing him to list birds. He has tons of ads on there I noticed today in addition to the booth at the flea market which is one of Toronto's biggest. I haven't been able to find anything about him on the internet but I imagine if I dig deep enough I would find alot! The only birds he had that looked in good shape were the small ones budgies and finches but even they had too many birds to a cage. It bothers me so much how people act like birds are disposable. I just had a knee jerk reaction when I heard him say he should drown him. I called the OSPCA today and they said they can only intervene if I can prove injury or neglect which even in the condition he is in probably wouldn't be gross enough to get them out and I don't even know where he lives to send them there. It sucks.

Just seeing that picture of the poor guy! I though you meant his beak was chipped or had a crack on the edge but that's just a million times worse than I imagined. I can't believe anyone could do that to an animal or at least not even help him. :(
Hopefully he'll be alright, but I guarantee you just saved his life from that mad man a the flea market. Poor baby, hopefully his beak can heal correctly. Everyone else has given good advice on the vets, I don't have any advice unfortunately.
I'd have to say I like the name Sage. It makes him seem wise, plus he's a very green little guy. Maybe a name to do with his beak, I can't think of anything else for now.
Thank you again for taking this little one in, even if you don't have the money right now he's surely much better off with you than that disgusting excuse of a person he was with. Thank you for saving him, even though it meant giving up your grocery money, you're an amazing person.
