I dont see a thread dedicated to weaving and nest building (unless there's an old one) and I just couldn't wait to share Puk's progress! He has been working at it for the past two weeks and is finally starting to get the hang of it! It doesn't look like much but I am so happy for him! There's a whole pile of materials that didn't stick and just fell through. But as you can see from the picture, we've actually got some staying Puk is still under 2 yrs old.

Id love to hear about others' progress and how you all are encouraging your floofs to weave

This is so cool!!! Go, Puk! It's so fun seeing them practice!

My Opie turned 2 in June and he's getting better at construction! I cut a bunch of small mulberry twigs and baked them, so they are a lot more stiff than they probably would be naturally. He spent the first year basically just poking them out the ceiling and walls in the corner where he sleeps. I also used paper straws but haven't found a new supply. He prefers twigs over anything else but will also use pens lol. If I had more bendy twigs I bet he'd be a little better at construction from the inside of his cage.

This week he's taken the whole back wall down and has been moving everything to the outside roof of his cage. This roof design is a little more intricate than what he's done before.

He also has become obsessed with weaving my shoelaces on my beat up inside shoes :wideyed:

Does Puk clean up? Opie's had a wooden sleeping platform and my favorite thing he does is sweeping it every morning - usually he'll grab a stick, but when he was still a baby he'd use anything nearby. My favorite was watching him try to clean with a piece of parsley :roflmao:

Puk builds the way Ralph did. Ralph didn't really want to build a Quaker nest, he just liked to arrange and rearrange his sticks and weave things through the cage bars. He would work on one of his stick structures then squawk for me to take it apart so he could start all over again. Ralph was good at keeping himself busy and building with his sticks was one of his favorite things to do. Maybe it will be for Puk too.

How fun! I've had Oscar for over a year and I've offered building material, but so far I've seen no indication of any interest. He's 22, so maybe it's just not him. Or his physical issues prevent it. Idk, but it's so awesome how they build!

Oh my goodness that's so funny!! Id love to see him sweep! Puk keeps a tidy sleeping area by shoving everything away with his beak. That's where he has started trying to weave- right beside his snuggle tent. I had read online that building with them can be a good way to bond. So I excitedly brought him a handful of new materials and tried putting a few pieces near what he'd started. That was a TERRIBLE idea. He was so mad! I swore never to interfere again and we appear to be back in good terms. Little troll

I thought of it this way: when Ralph would make his little structures with his wooden dowels, that was building. When he would thread his leather laces, strings or nylon cable ties in and out through the cage bars, that was weaving. What a Quaker does with sticks and other materials can described either as building or weaving.
