Using breakfast and dinner for foraging?

Hello, I just got this idea now after I’ve just asked a question on another category so don’t mind me haha.

I’m going to build a custom bird cage at some point and want to make it look and act as a conure’s natural habitat. I know that conures can be floor dwellers, picking seeds and bits of fruit from the ground, and I had an idea on foraging. I want to make the way I feed my birds as natural as possible which means limiting the use of bird bowls, hiding them, or maybe not using them at all.

I’d like to know if it’s possible to simulate foraging by putting their dinner on the ground or something? Currently I’m feeding my boy veggies at night but would like to make it both morning and night, and I have a feeling that placing wet veggies around the enclosure will be more of a bacteria risk than anything, even if I just put it on the floor. Does anyone do something similar, or have any ideas on how I can make it possible? If not, I was just thinking of putting a shallow dish on the floor when it’s feeding time. And what about water? I doubt I can get away with making it natural at all anyway haha, but any ideas or advice would be cool!

Thank you!

You could create a fountain for the water.
And yes, having food around would be good enrichment.
There's a woman I see posting videos on Instagram of her aviary, it's in Spanish but if you have an account you should look at her videos and you can see how she makes her aviary as natural as possible...

Thank you for your reply!

A water fountain does sound like a good idea, I'll look into it :)

I'll look into her account more, but that aviary looks so cute! I'd love to have foraging opportunities like that for my bird!

We've had good luck with foraging boxes and also with foraging mix from bio bird blends. I've put a few things on the floor but have kept it limited to avoid food being pooped on.

We also have a fountain in one of the aviaries; it takes some maintenance to keep to clean, but Nuggs likes it (unfortunately it's not on in this picture because we were changing out the switch on the pump).

Aww cute! How much maintenance exactly? I have a hard time cleaning my own room, so if a fountain takes a bit then I might have to opt out of it haha

Mostly just making sure to drain and clean it when it's dirty; ours is a big ceramic bowl with a little fountain pump, so it's not hard and we generally clean it out when we do the aviary (weekly ish depending on the amount of use - sometimes the birds aren't in it much and the fountain will sit empty) or when we see something in it. The big thing is making sure it's not in a poop hot spot since I haven't noticed her pooping while she's in it.
