About 5 minutes ago Pepper’s toe was squished in the jamb of his cage door while I was putting him in bed. He screamed loudly when it happened so I immediately opened the door. The toe has a red mark on it now and he is not putting all his weight on it, but he did eat a little bit.
I want to immediately take him to the vet, however last week we moved to a new place that does not have an avian vet for 3 hours. He seems really bothered by it right now but it did only just happen. He is not continuing to scream after it happened.
I am just terrified because I lost a bird due to internal bleeding caused by a toe squishing incident years ago. I’m trying to hold myself together but I feel so awful and afraid. Has anyone had this happen to a bird?? What can I do since I cannot take him to the vet tonight? The toe is not bleeding but has bruising. He puts some weight on it but not all.

I THINK he'll be fine. It looks like a little scrape and nothing looks broken. Keep a close eye on him and make sure he uses it and nothing is actually broken and I think he'll be fine after some healing. If anything starts turning black he has a major issue I'd think and should go in.

Yes, I have unfortunately squashed one of Burt's toes in the cage door when he was still quite young :( He made a really horrid noise when it happened and it bruised almost straight away, he was sore for a few days but as nothing was broken he recovered pretty fast.

How is your little one doing today?

Hello! Thanks for the responses guys. Pepper was just fine the following morning and has shown no signs of discomfort or pain following the accident. I think he must've just gotten a bruise and the small scrape. The scrape is healing up already. I think he is going to be just fine thankfully.
