What are these Susanne?
---------------------------------------------

Here are some pix's of the glass watering globes. Their approx 10-11" long, you filled them with water (from the opening in the tube) and stick the stem into the dirt in the pot.

If you need any I have several and can send...

They have them at Home Depot and at some of the pharmacies like CVS. I think it is a novel idea. We use them for an indoor palm.

Carole,
Mr. Jeepers is stunning! I've heard that the males flouresce under blacklight. Is that true?

Carole,

As to mealworms, that were suggested as needed for breeding. I think the reason is that they would need the higher protein from the mealworms for the chicks. I have been doing a little research and with my mousers, a good alternative might be Pigeon Peas (Cajanus cajan)

I had some canned ones and boy the mousers liked them. They picked it up and held it with the foot and ate out the insides of the peas.

Here are some links:

From the USDA, which shows nutritional content. Notice they also contain a good amount of amino acids which are good in conjunction with protien.

And the flowers look good enough for a mouser to eat. In fact, all parts of the plant is edible:

Wow..cool Susanne. Let's keep researching and trying to find the best way to keep our 'mice':p happy and healthy! I wonder if the creepers or parrots would like pigeon peas?

You can try them and see. They would be a good balance with other foods because of the amino acids. I was going thru the USDA database, and alot of fruit does not have much amino acids.

Amino acids are needed for the assimulation and utilization of other nutrients in the diet.

Occassionaly I would sprinkle some Brewers Yeast on the mousers fruit because it contains some amino acids.

Pigeon peas are available; canned, frozen, dried or raw.

The canned shown was high in salt. I was doing a search and canned can be found with no salt, and another brand is Gova.

I checked Whole foods and they didn't have them. I'm going to check some of the Cuban markets to see what types they have. Frozen or dried would be good to have on hand. The dried can be soaked to soften. And I'm going to get some seeds and start some plants.

I went to Publix yesterday and found another canned brand of pigeon peas that has 1% salt, which is way lower than the other brands. The mousers all scarfed up the new brand I also found dried pigeon peas, which I'll soak now that they have a taste of the pigeon peas, and for when they have babies..

do either of you rinse your canned veggies? a lot of the salt content in canned foods is in the liquid and rinsing well before preparing/serving will bring down the sodium/salt content

LOL @ the new avatar!:p I just avoid it/buy veggies without. I don't think I have ever given them anything canned... come to think of it.

Yes...I rinsed the can of pigeon peas prior to use. Canned fruit is as is, just drained the juice.
