Well the big day has come. Gimli is home. I have been planning, gathering and planning. Now here is this fluff ball in my house.
---Gimli is a long coated chihuahua, 11 weeks old---
We are not allowing Gimli in the bird room/ my office for some time. So I am on my laptop in the common area. I want to promote a harmonious and happy household. If the birds tolerate this fluffy bean, then at some point I will allow Gimli in that room when the birds are in their cages. That is my bird's space so if they reject this idea of a little wolf in there.. I will need to think of something.
I bought Gimli a playpen that has a zip top, so I can create birdie separation. Pi was very curious of this new noise in the house. Pi was begging to come out for a fly. So I placed Gimli in his play pen. Pi was flying the common area, he did his laps --nearly 10 in a row before a break. He is growing into a much stronger flyer. Pi is curious of this fluffy noise machine. It didn't take Pi long to feel relaxed and he is currently foraging the play stand. Pi is regularly checking in with me... more than usual so I think he is a tiny bit nervous. Though, I would say it is all going very well. Pi is preening, and showing a relaxed vibe on the play stand. Now Gimli has fallen asleep so that is probably helping. Keep in mind that there is 100% dog-bird barrier. So Pi is just observing.
I have not yet tried with the parrotlets, there is still time. Neptune is a very sensitive guy, so I want to be careful about the pace.
I have no want for these species to interact with each other. In fact I want them to always maintain as much separation as possible. What I want is harmony. They can learn of each other's existence and still feel safe. Gimli came from a house with parrots so he is sleeping through all the parrot vocalisations. Gimli also walked by the finches enclosure and everyone seemed fine. Gimli showed NO interest, and Zippy continued hopping around the cage bottom. So that is awesome! He was gathering bark for the nest
I brought my dslr when we picked Gimli up, so don't worry I will start uploading pictures this evening.
I started this thread to share how this integration goes. Adding a wolf to the flock.
