Good day to all.
I am new to this group and new to a inherited pionus.

So I received him 2 days ago. All is good in the land, but yesterday he started making this sound, i want to explain it as a loud purring sound, his whole body shakes, and he lifts his wings a little. Is this normal behaviour?

So quick background, he belonged to the owner of a small shop in our area (rural farm community). Since I started going to her shop, he favours me, flies to me, gets on my shoulder, he would even follow me out to my car. And that is how I became his new owner.

He is very sweet, eats well, interacts with me well.
Our household is very busy, I have 14 dogs, so I do not allow him to freely roam.

Thank you.

Annalene

Congratulations on your new little friend!

If you can get some footage of what you are seeing and share a link to it here then I think that will be the easiest way for members to help you.

Lol it dislikes me too I think!

I share videos from Instagram just by copying a link and sharing that but it can also be done from any other site that hosts videos.

The sound you're describing and wings lifting sounds like some kind of communication/behavior... maybe a mating behavior. Our blue head will make a grumbling or growling sound as she rubs herself all over my husband, haha. Usually signs of problems in birds are lethargy, fluffing up, not moving much, not eating or drinking, or their tail bobbing up and down as they breath. A healthy parrot makes a lot of different movements and noises as part of their communication with us :)

Wow! 14 dogs?! Are you a breeder, handler or some such thing?!

How old is your new bird? Do you have an estimate?

:welcome2:

My recently purchased 8 month old Pionus does a dance with her wings spread open. Always wondered what that was.

Does she pace back and forth and kinda growl? If so thats the Pionus strut and I think it's hormone related. Generally not a good idea to try to touch them when they are unless they fully trust you, and that's still pushing it.

I feel like sometimes that can also mean they want to fly somewhere, if they sort of flutter their wings and lower their heads looking right at something they want to get to. Or, it can mean they want a shower, especially if there's a sound of water or a vacuum in the background. My almost one year old Pi sometimes flaps and opens her wings, just seeming to be playing/exercising.

Agree. Olive does that when she's thinking about taking off, which can sometimes be a lengthy process (she was clipped when we got her and is still growing her feathers back, so she can fly some but not amazingly).

Nerd bird had bad flight feathers so his flying was very short hops and emergency escapes. His flying generally consisted of FLAP, FLAP, FLAP...THUD! Sometimes he'd grow in a good flight feather for a bit and he'd actually make it to where he was going and he'd be so proud of himself:xflove:

It might be “the pionus wheeze” that these species do when they are excited or stressed. Sounds like a wheeze or a huffing sound, there’s some videos if you google it.
