Is It Bad That I Don’t Feed My Budgies Millet?

I have two parakeets and I don’t feed them millet. I used to and they loved it. However, I read somewhere that it was unhealthy to feed them it too often so I slowed their intake until I stopped feeding it to them at all. Right now they eat pellets and fruits and vegetables everyday. They also have a viatamin supplement in their water. My question is, is that a good diet for them or should I incorporate millet? Thanks

I don't really give my budgies millet (I can't source millet sprays anymore) but they get a seed mix which has it in, budgies do some seed in their diet.

Be careful with the vitamin supplement its easy to overdose them.

My budgies get pellets, seeds, veggies, cooked grains, cooked pulses like lentils And chick peas and some fruit.

Millet is an ancient grain that is very healthy. If you can get it and they like it, I wouldn't worry too much about giving it to them unless it's all they will eat.

There is nothing wrong with feeding a good quality Millet seed to birds. In the wild they will eat it. @jmfleish is correct. If any species of bird is eating a good quality pellet they do not need vitamin supplements. Humans that eat well do not need vitamins either. You could be overdosing on vitamins which is dangerous, especially vitamin A.

I agree with the previous posters...millet is fine, as long as it's not the only thing your budgies eat...and it sounds that they eat well for you...

You shouldn't totally exclude seeds from a diet, that isn't healthy either. You can feed it in moderation, or as a treat. Human grade organic millet is a key ingredient in my homemade seed mix.

The man speaks the truth! :) I'm like 98% sure Chirp would gladly sell my soul for millet.

Oh dear. I hadn't thought of it like that but uh..... YEAH! Mine would too!

My Budgies go crazy for millet, but I feed it in moderation. I find millet to be a great training/taming treat, or just a great foraging treat or snack.

Our only bird that doesn't like millet is Milton...too small seeds...he just picks the little bunches of seeds off the stalk and tosses them to the floor...
