Introducing New Cockatiel

Hello! Sorry if this is a frequently asked question.

I am getting a new friend for my cockatiel, and I am really hoping that they'll like each other enough to share the same cage. I have read that I should first put them in separate cages across the same room for one or two weeks so they can at least see each other. And then after that, put the cages closer together for another one or two weeks. But how would they transition from there? Would they freely move between the two cages to interact with each other? Would I put one bird purposely in the other cage and see how they do? How would this work?

I would recommend letting them have out of cage time together after that. You’re not going to want to use one of the cages you already have to avoid any territorial issues.
