I'm not sure either, but I know my dog and cat can take it. I keep it on hand for bloat for my dogs.

So sorry I can't find more info for you....I'm sure some one will have an answer.

I don't know if that works with birds too? Their digestive system is different than ours.

Are antacids safe?
If you have some get them ready BUT DO NOT GIVE IT TO HER unless vet oks it

I also found this: Someone was advised to give tums to there bird. This was for an African Grey.

Page here: http://www.justanswer.com/pet-bird/3qphw-hello-african-grey-parrot-cog-socialised.html

You can also give an original formulation Tums, although I’ve never had to do this. ½ tab a day or every other day. Some birds eat these like it’s a treat. The fruit flavored types are fine as well, but be sure it’s nothing more than an antacid (calcium) product. You don’t want aspirin or other drugs added.

In order to properly process calcium in their system, birds need adequate D vitamins too. Ideally this is from natural sunlight, but these days with more energy efficient windows, much of the UVA and UVB rays are blocked.

Yes, Tums are safe for birds crumbled up on food.

From what I've read, absorption is the main concern, so if a tums/rolaids is available, I'd try and offer small pieces to her. I do believe they're only calcium after all.

Both my friends suggested she drink as much water as you can get into her. Or liquids in general. Since birds metabolize much faster than us, hopefully the liquids would be able to expel some of the medicine.

She also said no tums. Just LOTS and LOTS of water.
Fill the crop, then let it drain, fill the crop.. let it drain, etc.

But both suggest you call any avian vet to be sure.

Karissa (vet tech) said that treatment varies depending on the drug. She said to contact a vet ASAP and bring the bird to an emergency vet if you can't get ahold of your regular vet.

Thanks everyone!

Talked to my vet, and then went to the store to get Tums. She THINKS she'll be OK since she doesn't have any built up in her system yet and it wasn't an extraordinarily high dose.

Going to make the antacid which has 750 mg of calcium carbonate into a 10ml solution. Going to give her 0.4ml of that with a syringe. Just for future reference for anyone who makes a brain fart like me. :o:

So happy to hear you got a hold of your vet, and now have a plan of action.
