I saw this on their Facebook page but I haven't seen the price point yet. I'll be interested for sure.

I also saw the digs at TOPS. Not sure how I feel about it.

Good to have a new corn, peanut, and soy free option though.

Interesting, always good to have more options! But I’m a little uninformed… what would be the use case for these versus their Lifetime pellets? Would one be considered “better” than the other?

I think these are supposed to be a cheaper price point, while still being organic. Since they don't include corn, soy, or peanuts, would be good for people who want or need to avoid those. They also say they can be supplemented up to 20% of the diet vs Harrison's Lifetime which is only 10%.

So not better or worse, just a different target market.

They look just like Tops! Very interesting. I wonder about a price comparison. I’ll have to look into that.

They said they won't be selling it at all through their website, only through retailers. So far hasn't shown up on the ones they mentioned (Amazon and Chewy)

I did find it on Amazon, and thought it really strange that it is not on Harrison's own website. Then you can't combine it with other Harrison products to order.
I'm ready to order some TOPs and yes you do still pay a much higher amount on Amazon to account for the shipping, even though it says free shipping.
I think I'll order some of this to compare.

What’s so wrong with alfalfa?

I was planning on switching my birds from Roudybush to Harrisons and now I am a bit confused. Is lifetime still the general recommended to use or would HOPP be what to use for medium to small birds?

Depending on the age and species of your bird, you could presumably do either.

I mean technically nothing wrong with it being an ingredient. The new HOPP also has alfalfa, as does Roudybush. But when you have the main ingredient being alfalfa, is it really the best ingredient choice for a bird?

Harrison's website says:

"Formulated for Birds, not a repurposed mammal alfalfa pellet repurposed for birds.

Unlike some inferior brands that use alfalfa as the main ingredient-originally designed for mammals and too high in fiber for birds-Harrison’s Bird Foods is crafted specifically for avian nutrition. Our certified organic, high-quality formulas are developed by avian diplomates and PhD avian nutritionists to support optimal health."
Definitely a dig at TOPS.

Finally found it! Not sure if I missed it or was recently added.

$16.99 for a pound? I guess it's cheaper by a little when comparing other Amazon listings for Harrison's Bird Food, but still a lot more expensive than I was expecting with all of their "cost conscious" marketing.

It's the free shipping on Amazon that is not free.
The price for one pound of TOPs small pellets on Amazon with free shipping is $20.07.
The price on the TOPs site before shipping is $5.59
I'm sure the price shown for HOPP is mostly for the shipping, even though they call it "free"

I definitely understand how "free shipping" works, but if you can't get a lower price when adding multiple to your cart, then semantics about shipping vs no shipping don't matter.

Chewy price matches Amazon so it will likely be the same price there. Not much of a "savings" at that point if you can't get it lower than $17/lb anywhere, when I absolutely can get Harrison's Bird Food cheaper elsewhere, even adding in shipping costs.

Just a confusing launch all around I feel like.

They are saying that it will come in larger bags with better price breaks:

Screenshot_20250411-141736~2.png

Adult Lifetime Fine 1lb is currently on Amazon for $18.69. On the Harrison's website, that would cost $9.69. So figuring $9 shipping, that makes the HOPP 1 lb bag $7.99. It definitely brings the price down when looked at that way, but if you can't ever buy it for $7.99/lb plus shipping, then the savings get absorbed too much to be worth trying it for my own flock.

They've also said they will not be offering samples.

So the 5 & 25 lb bags are on Amazon now.

25 is $3.79/lb even with included shipping. As opposed to Harrison's Adult Lifetime Fine which is $229 a bag or $9.17/lb. So that's definitely a good savings if feeding in bulk

Screenshot_20250414-233443.png

5 lbs is still $8/lb. Adult Lifetime is $10.58/lb in Amazon for the 5 lb.

I mean, it is about time that TOPs has a competitor. Not my style either way, though. I think it is gimmick-y :cautious:
