my 3 month old tiel has been sleeping a lot the past few weeks and hasent been herself. I've talked to my breeder about my birds behavior which seems like theirs something's wrong with her. Her crop and belly have been full with seeds formula and air. She sleeps whenever we don't play or touch her. Her poop has been a variety of colors from normal to green to brown, dark green to black and so forth. My breeder suggested to me about giving her some apple cider vinegar watered down 10-1 to help with her digestive system. I've gave her some and massaged her belly and after that she has been making sounds like a compressor that's full and releases air like purging with a wet sound. It's sounds short but seems like she's having a hard time. Like she's in pain or trying to get through this episode. She has been vomiting food shaking her head from side to side but has stopped that, but the purging still continues. It's been going on for the past 30mins and haven't stopped yet. She seems weak and tired but can't stop purging. She looks bloated and just wants to cuddle. every purge she makes it smells like sour dough. I'm very concerned and worried that she won't make it much longer. the vets around here don't know what it could be and I think their not experienced in birds. Any info on what the problem is or could be would be greatly appreciated thankyou

It sounds like a crop infection.
Antibiotics (Nystatin) are the appropriate treatment if this is the case:

Candidiasis in Birds: Signs, Treatment, and Prevention of Yeast Infections in Birds

I would call the vet and schedule a visit, even if the vet is not a specialist. The sour yeasty smell is a strong indicator of an infection, and clearly her crop is not emptying. I would also contact the breeder with the potential yeast crop infection diagnosis (just in case).

Also, be very careful with the belly massage, if she aspirates food, she could get sicker.

How long have you had her a few weeks? 3 mo is sometimes just weaned so may not have been fully weaned when you got her. Have you gievn any formula?
Sounds like it could be a crop problem...sour smell not emptying.
ACV is ok but would not make it that strong.

Babies sleep alot too but if her breathing is in distress with vomiting
& sour crop probably be best to see a vet.

I've hand fed her since she was 7 days old. Yes formula. I've been trying to wean her off but it's hard now that I've gotten another baby tiel. Ok I will look into the yeast infection asap. My tiel hasent stopped with the purging and makes me feel like giving her the apple cider vinegar was a very bad idea. My heart feels very heavy ATM. Almost seems like she's struggling to get through this. I hope she stop purging soon. Thankyou for your info

Don't know how close you are to any of these but here is a list of vets posted by the Aloha Hawaiian Parrot Association. You should contact one or more and see what they say and consider bringing her in for an exam. She could have an infection that needs to be treated. She could have aspirated some food. I hope she will be OK.

I don;t know about 10 to 1 ACV. Its seems strong & I'd be comfotable only with maybe a teasp in a qt.

I personally have taken a sip of raw acv & it won;t burn my throat but if the baby has an infection the crop could be sore & it could burn.

You never want to do harm by giving something that can hurt esp if they are in a weakend condition.

The massage could have forced some food into the lungs??? You have to be careful with that.

Sour crop can turn really bad...

My breeder ordered yeast infection meds online and will get here soon.
Would the acv cause a reaction to the yeast infection she has?
Making her bloat and purge like how she's been doing.
Makes me feel like I shouldn't have gave her any acv. I agree that it may have been too strong for her. I nvr want to hurt my birds as they are a family member to us. I just hope she makes it through this rough patch.
i should have thought it through better I really didn't think this kind of reprocussions would happen to my tiel. Thanks again everyone for your info n suggestions

Don;t know ...maybe a healthy tiel might be ok but could upset the stomach.
I really have no idea how strong 10 to 1 acv is for a small distressed bird.

If its crop has not been emptying its not been eating well...but main thing
is to get it to take water...Can't live long without water...

Maybe make it warm water...

If the sour crop has gone on awhile the pathogen could have moved from the crop to inside the body & the infection is more diiffcult. The difficulty in breathing is a very serious sign.

I really think this tiel needs a vet...

Sorry, she needs to see a vet asap..don't do any more home remedies ,,she needs a wellness check, tell the vet everything you've noticed.

Yes a vet is needed - however you can go ahead and start the ACV. Here is a good thread about it. Apple Cider Vinegar | Avian Avenue Parrot Forum

My vet recommends ACV, in fact he said use it weekly to curtail yeast problems. However since you are in the middle of a bad problem, this bird needs to be seen.

From what I've seen in this case more acid I would not use.
Seems to say the crop is already acidic & hints at thinks like alka seltzer or baking soda in the very beginning. You seem to say this bird has not been themself for quite a while. You say weeks? Something is not right.
I would not try to treat his bird with anything but electrolytes, water etc..even the coconut water to get it hydrated. Its not in the need of more acid right now. This is a sick bird who may not have held any water down in a while & I would not complicate it anymore.

Read the other Avian Ave thread I posted. It has some homemade things to try but you can't be sure whats going on & how much time the little one has left.

After taking her to the vet. Overnight stay and test were taken. She had a yeast infection that got into her lungs and a parasite that was blocking her digestive system. It made its way to the top of her lower abdomen. After hours of trying to get her stabilized the doc had told me that she would b fine with meds n rest. When I got her back I held her in my hands, as I held her, she looked at me and passed right there in the office.... I'm so heartbroken ATM. I thaught she was fine and I didn't expect her to pass in my hands. I'm upset with the vet and his prognosis. We just got another baby tiel 2 days ago and she totally accepted the baby. I can't tell u how much she meant to me and my kids. Tragic loss for us she will forever b missed. Thankyou everyone for ur suggestions and thoughts. I'm kicking myself about this. I shud of done this I shud of done that..... a little too late. Rip Zooka

Get your other baby to the vet - it may have picked up the fungal infection, or more likely the parasite.

I'm sorry for your loss.
