i’m sorry if this isn’t the best place to post this but hi! i currently have a 5/6 year old green cheek conure, everyone has said he is male but i’ve never had him sexed, so i’m not sure how accurate that is. anyways, i recently moved into an apartment and have had to work more hours, i worry about the amount of time he spends alone and i feel quite guilty for not being able to spend as much time with him. I have been debating recently on getting another bird and i’ve been considering a budgie, which i know is not the recommended companion for a gcc but i’m not planning on them being super close. Rae, my bird, has always been more reserved and keep to himself more than an average gcc. So what i’m thinking is a budgie would be nice to fill the silence and their presence would make him feel more at ease maybe? another gcc is out of my budget currently, and i worry with his personality, he might not get along with another bird that’s not his same species, like a cockatiel.

i have considered giving him away or selling him to someone i trust, but i’ve been with him his whole life and i wonder if breaking our bond and leaving him with someone new be worse for him?

as for my last question, if this did work out, should i get two budgies? i’d prefer one, cuz three bird seems like a lot, but i worry that even if his companionship is enough for rae, rae’s might not be enough for him, because they have such big flocks and what not. im assuming i should get two. anyways, thank you so much for any replies and have a great day :)!

Budgies are actually less docile than you would assume. Green cheeks are also little hot heads. They wouldn't be species that I would let out together as the size difference would be dangerous.

budgies are very social birds so i dont think itd be fair for the budgie to have him without friends. id suggest a canary if youre looking for a bird that enjoys being alone like your conure.

Im on both sides of this one .

Without a doubt seperate cages. And I would get 2 boy budgies, I think budgies really need a friend, you don't want breeding and I'm inexperienced with female budgies, I had boys.

Now GCC will bite off toes if a bird lands on their cage while they are inside. GCC have that needle beak and they can definitely harm budgies, and budgies aren't really prepared or able to take on a GCC. And budgies can be like hey I want to be your friend and annoying over and over a GCC.

But I had budgies and my green cheek and they became buddies when out of cage together. Very good friends actually. But she also bit off 2 toes when they landed on her cage . Untill I put acrylic on top of the cages so that couldn't happen. And to be transparent, in a case of missplaced aggression she bit a budgie in the chest once and it bled . Tho fully recovered and never happened again and they remained very close friends . As in shared food out of cage , preened each other.

I have also had a couple of friends who had green cheeks and budgies separate cages but out together with no issues.

I followed a YouTube last who takes in birds and is experienced. She has one budgies and 2 green cheeks that are allowed out of cage together. Her budgie ended up with a hurt toe , cause unknown but green cheek suspected . She still allows out together but with close supervision.

So.....it depends on the individuals and management. It would be safest to have seperate cages no matter what as a given , and to not allow out of cage together. Have a time when GCC is out , then a time for the budgies to be out and no way fur them to walk in the green cheeks cage when they are out .
