Bird has a foul smell on the beak, what to do?

Yesterday I noticed that my greenfinch was lethargic and started smelling foul around the beak. He pooped normally which didn’t smell unusual but he didn’t want to eat, drink or do anything. After a few hours he became active again and started to recover from this lethargic state. He even wanted to bite me. This morning he was fine but still had this foul smell. There were no clinical symptoms of a candidiasis or other infection of the crop or digestive tract. Any ideas on what to do or what happened?

unfortunately there is no avian specialised doctor where I live, only for cats and dogs and I went there once and they couldn’t say anything about his health.
