These (now humorous) articles may just give you an idea of what it's like living with a bird. And if you want some photos of the destruction that small(er) parrots can make, let me know and I'll post the ones from my home. I'll start off by mentioning the 2 keyboards and mice that my little dah-lings have gone through so far.

Also please be prepared that just because YOU want the bird does not mean the bird wants YOU. They very well might choose someone else in the home as their "favorite". Are you prepared to deal with that?

Just make sure that if you decide to go away to college after you finish community college, your dad might be left taking care of your bird. Also, I know it's been said already, but your dad must also be willing to take your bird to the vet for check ups at least every year. I actually take mine every six months. Any medicine, lab tests etc. will cost a pretty penny. So while you might get him to agree to a bird, make sure he knows about all the expenses and life changes it will bring. I hope everything works out for you and Mango.

one caution about Mango: if her current owner is a female, the bird may reject you because you are a male. Many birds get used to the gender of their present owner and refuse to deal with the opposite gender. Or, you could bring her home with you just to have her bond with a female in your own family!

Good luck with Mango.
