So sorry for your loss of Bobber. It's tough to lose a pet and only bird/pet lovers can understand that loss. I'm sure all of us here on AA send your our Thoughts and Prayers. Bobber was so lucky to have had you take such good care of him for the time you had him. Accidents happen and it was not your fault. Please don't be too hard on yourself. They are called Accidents for a reason. Enjoy the fact that you still have Jingo. It's always good to let the kids know the truth about lost pets even though it might be difficult.
Bobber is now in Paradise!

We buried Bobber in the backyard under the lilac trees tonight. Nikolai got upset a little. He has been asking if Bobber will get back up, or if he bites now. It is so hard for him to understand at this age.

Oh no, not Bobber! :sadhug: I am so, so sorry! My heart aches for you and your family.

I don't know if it would help, but back when I helped out in daycare, we had these funky-looking plastic guards on the doors so kids couldn't open them. They just spin freely unless you grasped tight enough to turn the knob as you normally would.

@AkasyaEllric suggested putting a hook and eye lock on the door, high up so it will stay locked closed. Nikolai unfortunately has outsmarted the door knob covers!

The hook/eye is a good idea!

Of course he has, he has your creativity after all!

I'm so sorry for your family's loss. You gave him a wonderful home and love. Something he might have not gotten if he ended up in a home with less understanding people.

When my friends dog had to be euthanize due to cancer (11yr old Great Dane). The vet came to her house so he could pass with his family. Her six year old (who loves superheros) held him as he went. She asked why Patty had to leave her and my friend told her that sometimes pets have other callings and it was Patty's time to watch over them and protect them from bad guys she just couldn't do it at home any longer. Her daughter was very sad but said she understood and that she knows Patty will do a good job. They cremated Patty in a pink cape. Her daughter is 8 now and still talks about Patty being a Superdog.

I am so sorry - my heart goes out to you and your family.

You gave Bobber a wonderful life, and it's a testament to your patience and love that you tried to find ways to keep him in your flock despite his fiesty behaviour.

Oh, so sorry! I’m just now seeing this-

I have 2 young children...we have lots of animals so they’ve had to deal with deaths a few times. Telling them is the hardest part-you want to protect them from that pain. Give Nikolai a big hug for me. Hopefully the ratties can give him some extra love.
