Yours looks very sweet.

I don't think you'll ever find a consensus because some believe (double) yellow headed, yellow crowed and yellow naped are all the same species, and some believe (double) yellow headed are sub species of yellow crowned.

Trying to figure out what mine is made my head ache.
I adore her! She's the sweetest bird I have. As far as sub-species is concerned, I think you're right! Even the doctors are all fighting about it!:) To me, she's just my Ams!:)

We shall see how it all goes. I know the surgeon who assisted already feels horrible and many, many tears have been shed when we weren't sure if she would make it. The UW has been incredibly good to me over the years, so I'm not going to do anything to ruin the incredible relationship I have with them. First and foremost, I want Ams to get the best care possible...the bill is absolutely secondary.
Like I said I feel like a poop saying it! Now feel like a bigger poop :sad6:

I didn't realize that Ami went to a Dr. school. Everyone has to learn somewhere. I think it is a good idea too! I just don't think I could for Buddy's sake. Maybe if he started as mine, & a baby. I'm pretty sure he's 19/20 yrs. Plus, inherited ='ing adopt. Of course, the vet coming soon & my guess is my mind may change after the first payout for the appointment.

Thanks for the idea, if I had to guess it would be Cornell college where I'm @ & its not exactly close. My husband is trying to get ahold of an acquaintance that has 2 Mc Caws, as a vet recommendation.

Hey this is not my thread, not sure if this is a good place to ask... But-t-t....

Travel carriers... Debating between hard acrylic & soft sided nylon cloth. I want to get Buddy to the vet, but concern is... If car accident... Strapping into seatbelt, & bouncing around. My guess BaseRock :wasntme: may need this too!

Acrylic... Possible injury, but will stay in seat belt. Soft side do they even strap in well? Then if strap well, only soft bouncing in accident. Opinions please!!!!

:thanks: & :hug6: Rain

I had to go and look! So you got a Pi??? Neat! I fostered one for about a year and they are definitely awesome birds! Congratulations!

On the vet front, I'm going to hazard a guess and say that you live next to Texas A&M?:) Great school! Definitely take your bird there if they see patients. The UW is like third or forth in the nation and that's one of the reasons I think I would never move far from Madison! They have all the bells and whistles as far as equipment and I've really gotten to know the staff there...for more reasons than one! LOL!

I got lucky on the lab thing. The special species docs know me well because of the size of my flock and they just kind of asked me if I would be willing to do it a few years ago. Who would pass that up? Well I'm sure some people might, but I'm not one of them!:) I've been doing it ever since. They usually have one at the end of May and I guess there are two coming up sometime in June. I think they do one in September too but can't remember. I'm going to be doing them for the rest of my life to pay off Amarillo's vet bill!;)
Yup! I'm in Bryan, just up the street from A&M and they have a full avian program there iirc. I'll see if i can figure out how to do that as bringing home this birb happened all of a sudden and caught me slightly off guard financially. I wasn't even planning to be seriously looking till the end of this month. Just means i'll have to wait a week or two before I bring him/her in for a full physical and disease panel I had planned. Would be extremely helpful if the university would see her for free or for less.

I'm a very DIY kinda guy. I'm going to make my own carrier. I'm going to make one of these

But it's going to have a PVC frame inside it so i can put a seatbelt around it.

In the future when i have her harness trained since i take my pets EVERYWHERE with me if they enjoy that, and they all have, i'll be making one of these for getting around within town, slow speeds, roads only, no highways.

The UW Vet School is incredible and you have so many more options at your fingertips. The appointments take a little longer because the forth year students take the intake information first before you see the actual vets. Special species vets are all incredibly skilled and we have specialists in just about everything you can imagine. I think I'm very, very lucky to have them in my backyard and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else. If you live near Cornell and they see patients, which I'm pretty sure they do, I would definitely take advantage of it.

Costs are probably a little more than that of a regular vet but I think it's well worth every penny. I have full confidence in them and of any of the top vet universities. Michigan is another really good one that I wouldn't hesitate to go to along with UC-Davis.

As for carriers, I don't get fancy. I just use a cat carrier for mine. They're actually the easiest. I do have two similar to the one that Colin posted and they're nice but they're hard to store when you need as many as I do. Cat carriers work very nicely!:)

I'm pretty sure the University takes patients but it will not be for free or for less silly boy! As a matter of fact, plan on paying more than you would for a regular vet. They have bills to pay just like everyone else and you'll be getting expertise handling there along with taking advantage of the best research around and the best equipment, so don't gawk at the prices, although I would be interested in what they charge you!:)

Here is a link to their services for small animals so you can call and make an appointment!:)

Well there is already a certified avian vet that's not connected to the university that EVERYBODY recommends. I will make calls and honestly go with who's the most reasonably priced. Either way I'm sure the bird will get top notch care.
