How's little miss going today? Poor little girl looks like Binky. Binky can fly in one of those.
She's still doing really well but hates taking her meds. We had a quick med check on Thursday and they think she looks really good but they are still really worried about the egg. As long as she's pooping and eating and we are being careful they want to keep waiting before taking it out. We go back again next Thursday. Here's a pic of her at the UW. We're arguing about what species she is!:)

I'm glad she is doing well!

So what were the suggested possible combinations of Amazons? I'm guessing Double Yellow Head is in there? :)

Subspecies!:). Give me a break, I'm exhausted! Lol! We can't decide if she's a double yellow or just a plain old yellow. I think she's a yellow head because she just doesn't have as much yellow as other doubles I've seen. She's also not as big. I guess this has been a topic of discussion!:) Anyone else want to weigh in?

She's got an egg stuck in her that might be in her abdomen. When they tried to go in the first time there was so much scar tissue they couldn't get to the egg and they accidentally cut her intestine. They had a specialist come in and repair it but it was a very scary touch and go for several days to see if the seal would hold. She got through that, now we need to watch to make sure that it doesn't heal so much that it doesn't block the intestine. We should be past that in the next week or so. Then we still have to deal with the egg which is going to be a risky surgery. They want to give her a few weeks to heal before they go in again. As for the bill, they keep telling me they haven't even figured out what it is yet. They were already trying to shave costs off for me before the surgery and I know that she was getting incredibly special treatment from one of the surgeons who felt horrible about the accidental intestinal cut. I honestly don't care what it costs but Jon is starting to get a little nervous!;)

I curious could they spay her or have a hysterectomy? Its that even an option? I'd hate to see her go through this again. I know is it not something that's commonly talked about. I have read of male Moluccan who were very aggressive being neutered. I haven't seen lot of talk about that sort one thing and it was awhile back since i read it and i don't know how reliable the souce was. I guess I'm just wondering what's the path forward is? It maybe it's too soon to know?

Again I wish you guys all the best

Oy, well keep us posted! I hope for the best and i'm glad you're taking care of her. After this you'll have to get some birdie chastity belts or something.

I read somewhere that this is not usually recommended for birds... but with the scar tissue.... I was thinking this maybe the exception to the rule.

Oh my! She is so sweet!!! Poor thing must be tired @ the least... I had an issue w/ a fur baby getting under the skin necropsy from an injection med we used per the vet. I hate to say this but I'd make them feel worse about the intestinal mistake! They could've killed her & what about future issues from it? It could cut your cost more in the end. I feel like a poop saying it, but isn't it about our Fids longterm life @ the end of the day!

:gbh: to you & Ami!!!

Spaying and neutering in parrots isn't done unless it's a dire need because it's so dangerous due to where the organs are located. I've heard that the male's testicles can grow back but I don't know if that's true or not. I'm not really all that worried about Amarillo laying again. I set her up for the perfect storm offering up lots of cardboard boxes for her to go into and chew up and nest in and her and Iris were getting all lovey dovey. They will also be putting an implant in her to slow down the hormonal urges. I think we will have it taken care of from there.

Ooooohhhh! You're bringing home a birdie? Congratulations! I would suggest you get the bird DNA'd so you know the sex and if you have a female, you just have to be wary of the possibility of an egg issue at any time. Also, I highly suggest that you don't offer up dark nesty places for her, if you have a girl. That's where I got into trouble.

Honestly, I didn't even know she was with egg. I offer up four of my birds two to three times a year for labs where new students come in and learn about how to handle parrots. They get physicals and sometimes they do blood work on one or more of them. So, for me it's a free physical and sometimes blood work and I get a pretty nice credit to my account and for the vet school, they get models to teach future vets. At the last vet lab, they felt the egg when they did the physical on Ami otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue. I waited about two weeks for her to lay and then brought her in because it was just not coming out and that's when they decided it had been too long and CT scans showed they really should go in and find out what was going on and then the rest is history.

We shall see how it all goes. I know the surgeon who assisted already feels horrible and many, many tears have been shed when we weren't sure if she would make it. The UW has been incredibly good to me over the years, so I'm not going to do anything to ruin the incredible relationship I have with them. First and foremost, I want Ams to get the best care possible...the bill is absolutely secondary.

Yup, posted a pic in my "what to look for in a rescue zon" thread. Spoilers, It's not a zon at all.

And this is interesting! I live right next to one of the most respected vet schools in the country. i wonder if i can work out something like that lol. how did you arrange it? Great timing though. You really lucked out.

And yeah i've learned all about mitigating hormonal and mating stuff in birbs in my research. Going to be strictly regulating light exposure, no nesty stuff, no lower body petting or under wing petting. If it starts coming onto me, regurgitating at me, making chicken noises, i'm going to walk away and come back when it stops.

I don't think you'll ever find a consensus because some believe (double) yellow headed, yellow crowed and yellow naped are all the same species, and some believe (double) yellow headed are sub species of yellow crowned.

Trying to figure out what mine is made my head ache.

I had to go and look! So you got a Pi??? Neat! I fostered one for about a year and they are definitely awesome birds! Congratulations!

On the vet front, I'm going to hazard a guess and say that you live next to Texas A&M?:) Great school! Definitely take your bird there if they see patients. The UW is like third or forth in the nation and that's one of the reasons I think I would never move far from Madison! They have all the bells and whistles as far as equipment and I've really gotten to know the staff there...for more reasons than one! LOL!

I got lucky on the lab thing. The special species docs know me well because of the size of my flock and they just kind of asked me if I would be willing to do it a few years ago. Who would pass that up? Well I'm sure some people might, but I'm not one of them!:) I've been doing it ever since. They usually have one at the end of May and I guess there are two coming up sometime in June. I think they do one in September too but can't remember. I'm going to be doing them for the rest of my life to pay off Amarillo's vet bill!;)
