This was the first breeding for the parents. I tried removing anything they'd see as a nest, then they tried nesting in my gym bag and eventually the mum (Beef) laid two eggs on the same day by the window. I caved and gave them a nest and let her lay the rest of the eggs which ended up being 5 in total. They did a great job with the eggs and mum would take the night shift and dad the day shift but as soon as they hatched they were just pushing them out from under themselves, hissing, wing slapping and pecking at the babies heads which is why they've been hand fed by me since day 1.

Beeper was first to hatch out and then baby number 2 hatched that same evening but passed away during the night. Baby 3 hatched out a couple days later and passed at 3 days old, I believe from aspirating food. Then baby nugget was the 4th and final egg to hatch (egg 5 was infertile).

I took the nest away after he hatched and they were trying to breed again but luckily i've got on top of that now and haven't seen any kind of hormonal behaviour.

The dad (Taco) is 2 years old but the mum is still young herself at a year old so in hindsight I should have never expected her to look after the babies, I just struggled to get on top of the hormonal behaviour in time and it's a hard lesson learned. The vet did speak to me about a hormonal implant for her but I don't think it's necessary right now unless this becomes a regular thing that doesn't stop with environmental changes. I have fake eggs at the ready now for if anything like this happens in the future but hopefully that won't happen again.

While I love little Nugget to pieces the stress and sadness of losing them plus nearly £1000 being spent on vet bills and equipment this is not an experience I want again!
Young birds and first time breeders often don't go well for chicks. I'm glad you have the fake eggs at the ready as I'm sure they will likely breed again, it's only natural. I am happy though, that you were willing to take the babies to the vet for help. It was a very honorable thing for you to do. I hope your last little one grows up and gives you many years of joy.

I'm useless with genetics and colouration, but does he look like a pied? Mum is an 'albino' and dad is pied. Not that it matters but I love seeing all his new feathers everyday :) (The big lump of formula on his chops is in the process of being soaked off!)

Yes, baby is a pied!

Which means that mom is either a visual pied or split pied. You *might* be able to tell with a black light. If she looks like a normal female cockatiel with all the bars and stripes, she's most likely split pied.

However, if she's got solid patches of tail and wing feathers (primarily the outer 10 flights or outer 3 tail feathers?), she's a visual pied.

This photo shows why you don't want to trust the inner flights! ;)

It's been a busy few weeks for me so sorry for no updates. Baby nugget is nearly 6 weeks old and still growing :) He started having some crop issues around a week ago but the emeprid seems to be working well, and we've sent off fecal samples, a crop sample and feathers for polyoma testing to cover all bases so i'm hoping to find out what's going on. He's weighing in at 65g so still growing but slowly! He's started making noises like an adult, is flapping his wings a lot and trying to find things he can eat.

Hopefully the test results will be back this week and i'll know exactly what's been going on, and i'm hoping that with him being older he's old enough to stay healthy! The emeprid never seemed to help with Beepers crop but Nugget is doing very well on it. Here's some updated pictures of him with all his new feathers!

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to see Nugget is progressing and growing into a beautiful bird. I'm glad you've done the testing and hopefully it will give you any answers to help you go forward with caring for the little guy. He's at the perfect age to introduce other foods so his diet will have the variety that makes for a healthy bird. Will you be keeping Nugget in a separate cage or a community cage with the parents?

He'll be going in his own separate cage to begin with until he's more confident flying and the others get used to him. I don't want him to get bullied by being put straight into the communal room with everyone as they've got a nice little flock going. I'll cook up some veg for him today to start having a try of new things :)

What age do you recommend they go into a cage? I've started turning the temperatures in his box down a bit to acclimatise but as he's behind with the weight development I wasn't sure if it would still be several more weeks until he's ready for a cage, or if he's always just going to be a small cockatiel and he'll be ready for that soon.

Fully feathered, I would say. I generally place my baby green cheeks in a small cage once they have good feather coverage, with some pins left, but since he has no siblings to keep warm, I'd say to wait until he is totally feathered.

I want to say that Nugget is so cute! That pattern on his back looks like a heart. It's like he's thanking you for your diligent care

If he's still a bit underweight he would benefit from being warmer in the box. He should start to hit a stage soon where he is much more active and will try to escape the box more. If you have a good sized playpen of sorts where you can give him some out time supervised to allow him to climb around on some perches it will build some strength in his feet and some confidence. I have in the past used a laundry basket with some perches set at different levels when I was still feeding babies that were weaning. As they were beginning to fly I got bombarded by hungry babies flying at me. Fun times and good memories!

Thank you! I ended up getting a smaller cage than what he'll eventually go into which fits his little brooder box inside of it and he can come and go as he pleases. At the moment he hasn't worked out that he can leave the box but i'm hoping it will give him the extra space he needs when he does work it out.

he does love to come hang out on my shoulder now without getting cold which is nice! He's almost fully feathered on the top half of his body, just waiting on those little pin feathers down his back and on his legs.

Thank you! I decided to get him a very small cage he can go into and explore which is just big enough to have his warm box inside as well. I ended up turning his temperature down again today as I noticed him panting so I don't think he's far from not having the box at all. I do have a k&h heater in the cage as well which will give him the option to snuggle up with if needed. He also refused half of his formula this morning which i'm hoping is just part of the weaning process? He's had two full feeds after that so i'm not concerned but i'm always worried about behind ahead or behind with his needs considering his age vs weight!

Have you started giving him a small flat dish with other foods to explore? Soaked pellets, a little chopped romaine, bits of cooked sweet potato, carrot? There's more but start off with 3-4 options to pick at.

Yes he's being offered pellets, carrot, arugula, broccoli and a little bit of corn! He's definitely interested in it but I can't tell how much is actively being eaten or what's just being put in his mouth and spat out again but he seems to enjoy picking at it all :)

Another delayed update! We got his test results back from his polyoma pcr, fecal and crop samples and he was negative for every single thing he was tested for. The vet said he's the most extensively tested baby she's ever seen!

While i'm obviously over the moon he's free from any bacteria, yeast or polyoma and has officially been signed off from the vet, i'm still going to be on edge a while worrying that issues will pop up down the line now he's off his medication and i'll never be sure what caused Beeper to never make it.

But for now i'm just enjoying my baby! He's now a strong flyer but just needs to gain some confidence exploring away from me more as he is very attached. He's been introduced to the rest of the birds for a short millet visit yesterday and they're slowly showing interest.

Hopefully no more posts from me regarding his health but I wanted to thank every single person who responded on here, this was one of the most exhausting and stressful things i've had to do and all the advice and support really helped me along.
