Hi everyone. This is my first time here on this forum. I may mumble a bit; apologies in advance.
Backstory: I've had my gang of budgies since 2017 and successfully stopped their egg-laying adventures. They're cage-free birds (they've got a room of their own, about 25 m2), and unfortunately, after all these years, a pair mated and laid eggs (she hid the eggs under the cage cover), and by the time I discovered them, I saw life brewing in them. I got the other eggs she laid infertile, but the first two were already developing. Anyhow, the eggs hatched; one is 10 days old, and the other one is 8. Now, I'm an extremely calm person, even under extreme scenarios, but not when it comes to my birds, and I've read too many horror stories online about how the mother budgie can harm the little ones in so many different ways for a variety of reasons.
Since yesterday I feel like she's eating less and is more tired compared to earlier. I have seeds right inside her nest, like 10 cm away from the little ones, but she barely touches them. The father seems like he doesn't do much, but perhaps he does, and I'm just not seeing it. She loves boiled eggs and never liked millet for some reason. She also likes some greens (but prefers cucumbers over the other greens, which isn't that good, I suppose, since there are barely any calories in it, and it's mostly water). From what I observe from afar, babies have their crops full. By my logic, she wasn't feeding them properly, but then they wouldn't even grow, right? Also, by my logic, despite my best efforts, she's not eating well enough, yet her weight is decent (44-45 grams) and doesn't move around, so she must be at least doing well enough to retain her weight.
She won't eat seeds or millet, but if I offer cucumber or boiled eggs, they're both devoured. I never wanted to breed them, nor did I want baby budgies; alas, this all happened. I've been in contact with my vet (avian), and I'm supporting her with "multivitamin amino acid acerola" and "multimineral & D3", offering her greens, seed, and pellet in the nest as well as regular seed locations she used to share with the others. She just seems more tired, and you can tell she gets tired more easily than a couple of days before. I'm providing her with peace, supportive vitamins and minerals, greens, pellets, seeds, and eggs. What more can I do?
Also, is it normal that she spends less time sleeping with the little ones? My logic says, yeah, they're growing, and one is popping feathers, and the other is starting to have them. Plus, it's summertime here and quite warm. Maybe that's the reason? What I hate the most is, normally, I take my birds to the vet right away if I fear a condition is present, but can't do it now because the babies aren't feathered yet. Simply put, I'm losing my mind here. What more can I do to ensure things will go well for them?
