Parrot Screaming to Local Lorikeets!!

Hello everyone!

I'm new to Avian Avenue as I was recently given a parrot - an INR called Monte. Monte is pretty well behaved most of the time but there are some issues...one of which is his calls to the lorikeets in the area. Monte lives in my room as nowhere else in the house is suitable for now. I also spend a lot of time in my bedroom as it is the only place in the house that is mine. Whenever the lorikeets fly past he imitates their call (a horrible sound) and basically shatters my ear drums. At the moment the calling is occasional but the tree next door is about to bloom and when it does the lorikeets will be hanging around for weeks.

Has anyone else dealt with a similar issue? Is there any way to stop a bird from imitating and calling to local parrots? Any advice is appreciated!

I would love to live somewhere with wild lorikeets. They remind me so much of my boys in personality. :D

About the calls, I'm not sure how to help. I grew up with a green cheek conure and he picked up on the grating woodpecker screams outside which no one in the family was particularly thrilled about but it couldn't be helped. It's totally natural for birds to make their calls but if they scream all the time they might not be getting enough attention. You could try taking him out more often and finding toys or games to play with him. I see ringnecks do funny little beak touches and head bobs all the time which would probably make for some fantastic play time. If he's distracted with playing with you then he won't be thinking about the wild birds outside the window.

Hi ZekeZakck, thanks for the response! Good advice - he has a heap of toys to play with but does not recognise them as toys yet because he was previously only exposed to plastic and I'm a big believer in natural materials. So I'm teaching him how to play with them. He's out pretty much whenever I'm in the room, so anywhere from 4-8 hours a day. I train him about 1-3 times a day and talk to him about what I'm doing when I'm engaged in other activities. But as soon as there are lorikeets he goes nuts, no matter what is happening. It's a bit insulting after putting in so much effort, time and love to know that he would much rather be with the wild birds outside! I guess it's a reminder that these birds were never meant to live in captivity :(
