Our 40 year old Lilacine Amazon "Solomon" AKA "Beaky Guy" has been falling off his perch at night lately. He seems fine during the day however. The problem is I'm having difficulty finding an avian vet locally. Any suggestions about the falling at night would be helpful. Last night he fell off his perch around 11 pm. He was sitting on the bottom of the cage and seemed alright. About 30 minutes later I checked on him before I went to bed and he was sitting on the floor in the doorway of his cage still. I put him back on his perch and he seems fine today. Would appreciate input. Thanks

How is his foot strength/grip when you have him out?

Do you have a platform perch in his cage?

Where are you located? There may be a member that can recommend an avian vet.

He is pretty much my husband's bird. I'll have him check his grip and post back. He does not have a platform perch. I just recently found out about them. My husband can probably make one. Do you have any suggestions as to where to purchase one or what type to purchase? We're located in Southern Oregon - Roseburg.

Secret, one of my zons, likes basswood platforms. I also have a rope perch that she likes.

Main thing is to get the parrot to a vet to rule out other issues that can take the birds life. Better safe than sorry. Like humans, early treatment is better (and can be less expensive).

@Kiwibird08 are you familiar with this part of Oregon with regard to vets?

Hopefully a good vet can be found in your area. In addition to platform perches pad the bottom of the cage with paper towels, fleece or towels. Make sure the towels don't get stringy and that the fleece is non pilling. You can also wrap perches with vet wrap which can sometimes help birds to grip better.

often time vets who handle exotics do have extensive experience with birds.
While they are not certified Avian vets, they may be able to help you or refer to an avian specialist.

UPDATE: Still no vet but I have a phone call in to the S.P.C.A. to try and find one. Also, my husband is going to build a platform perch. Thanks for all your feedback. Please feel free to add more.

My old YCA George used to fall from his perch at night occasionally too. His avian-certified vet found no physical cause for it, and concluded that George got so completely relaxed when he slept that his grip on the perch loosened. Fortunately, he was never hurt when he fell, and he would usually just laugh and climb back up to his sleep perch.

While you are waiting for a platform perch, lower the one he falls off of and the rest of them too. To maybe a foot or so off the bottom of the cage - assuming there is nothing down there to harm him.
