Hey all! I need some advice for how to keep a heavily-clipped bird who was once flighted safe as they explore.
My lovie, Pippin, was originally found outside in a hedge. The lovely vet at the emergency clinic Pippin went to took very good care of them, but also did a…not-great job at clipping their wings. She was a bit heavy handed, to say the least, and Pippin went from a pretty decent flier to falling like a rock at every attempt.
Pippin still tries to fly, but never makes it farther than they can leap before sailing keel-first into the floor, and I’m very worried about them.
Is there anything I can do to protect them while they’re out playing, beyond keeping the floor around their cage padded with blankets? And is there a way I can prevent them from learning to fear flight? I hate the idea of them finally growing in new flight feathers but being too frightened from numerous falls to use them.
All of my past birds have been fully flighted, even the ones I had as a kid when clipping was all the rage, so this is new territory for me and I am not a fan.
