Hello,

My birds have been plucking so they’ve been getting cone treatment. I noticed today that one of them have some sacs filled with air. I looked online and saw it might be an air sac. What should I do??

First image is the bird I think has the ruptured air sac, the second image is of the other bird.

Why are they plucking? Has this been investigated?

You are best to see a vet if you have a ruptured air sac.

I took them to the vet 3 times because of the plucking and was told they are most likely stressed. I haven’t taken them in maybe a year and a half now though because of college and work :(.

One of them hurt their foot a while back and I don’t know if that’s why she plucks they also got hurt around their neck sometime ago while flying. I was told her foot wasn’t broken but she limps a bit now.

Honestly I feel really ashamed and afraid to take them to the vet. I know it sounds selfish, but I’ve been considering rehoming them a lot for the past year because I’m not at home as much and they started plucking after covid when I went to university and got really busy. :/

Plucking is usually behavioral, however it can also be due to certain skin infections.

That is air in the crop.
We see it more in chicks as they are not fully feathered (in adults their feathers cover the skin in that area making it hard to see).
It is not ruptured or it would not look like that - filled.

Definitely go back to the vet and keep on top of the plucking issues. Even if they say it is stress, it is worth keeping up to date with health checks.

I'd be curious if pain meds were prescribed. Maybe they pluck because of pain, which is now a learned behaviour.

Interesting that you have two plucking birds... Did the vet give any theory on that? Did their plucking start at the same time?
