Hi everyone!

I have had budgies a few times in my life, but not for a very long time now. I also did wildlife rescue/rehab many years ago. I took care of several waterbird species and also kingfishers and lorikeets. It was very rewarding! I have always been an avid bird watcher.

About a month ago, I talked a neighbor out of their 2 budgies, as I could tell they were unable to care for them. They put them outside on a patio, all day & night, and the weather was very hot. When I noticed they were there, it continued for several more days...Also, there was construction going on right in front of our building, with heavy equipment tearing up the street, then re-paving, for about 4 days! I did not know the neighbor, and it took me a few days to contact them, and ask if they needed to give the birds a new home, etc...Believe me, I was so stressed about these babies going through all that, it was keeping me up at night!!

Anyway, they are about 4 or 5 mos old, my best guess. They have calmed down over the last month, as I keep them in at night, but put them outside during day, weather permitting. They look really good now, with good diet, etc..

They are precious, really love them! Named "Lemmy" & "Lola". I'm so glad I got up the nerve to approach the people, and get them out of the situation! The lady was nice about it, but her excuses were that her toddler pesterd them, and her husband couldn't sleep because they made too much noise...So she had to put them outside...God, peeps are just ignorant or what?! Anyway, I sure was glad I didn't have to "steal" them to stop their suffering, but I was on the verge!! Actually, the people probably would not have cared!!

My delima is this, and I hope someone can give me some advice/suggestions on this:

In a couple of weeks, I'll be going out of town for a week. Since the poor babies are just now calming down into a routine, I really prefer not to have them boarded, or go to a friends house, both new environments, etc.. I prefer to leave them at home, and am not sure at this time, if I will be able to have someone come to check on them. I do plan on getting some feeders & waterer that will keep them fed for several days, etc..I thought about taking them, but, I have 2 doggies going, and I'm just not sure that an 8 hr car trip, would not stress them out!

What do you all think about, if it is ok to leave them alone, if I can't get someone to come by to check on them? (I will also put a grate in the bottom of the cage, to keep them from getting in the mess, if no one can come clean it.)

I hate thinking I'd have to put them in another new environment, so, can anyone give me any other ideas or advise?

Thx for patience in reading my story! Would greatly appreciate your feedback!!

I

Welcome!
I would have someone come to check on them once a day to at minimum
Clean the water and food bowls and put fresh water and food.

I adore budgies and so glad you rescued them. Simple answer to your question is no. Not a good thing to leave any bird alone for several days. Unexpected things could happen like one of them getting caught or a freak injury. Boarding them would be better. Ask your vet if he or she knows anyone reliable to care for them. We have a bird sitter thread on the forum. You may want to check that out. Are you with the birds when they are outside? If not that is not safe. There was a story here about a woman who put her budgies outside without supervision. Next thing she knew there was a hawk on top of the cage who managed to get into the cage and kill one budgie.

Birds are fairly resilient to changes. I have left my birds alone overnight, but that's it. Any longer than that and they definitely need to be checked on. They can quickly get themselves into trouble, sully their water, run out of food, etc. I don't even leave my cats for more than two nights without being checked on! Would you leave your dogs a week without being checked on?

:welcome2: I hope you enjoy your time here

I would definitely have someone come in and check on them daily. If one of them decided to have a birdy bath in the water you could quickly run out of water. Or one might have a "night fright" and injured themselves. I appreciate that we all have lives to lead and no one can watch their birds 24/7. But having some one come in daily to make sure everything is fine seems reasonable to me :)

I rarely leave the house overnight, but last April I got hospitalized for a week and my two friends came every day and checked on the birds and my cats and dog. I hate leaving my pets alone, so I always recommend at least once a day supervision.

I second what basically everyone else has said. I don't think Chirp has ever been home alone for more than 8 hours, but I still make sure he has lots of food/water when I leave, and I make sure he's well separated from our dog and the fish tanks.

For a small story to act as a word of caution, about 6 months ago I popped out to Walmart to get some things. I was gone maybe all of an hour and a half. I came back and I saw that Chirp had managed to knock the stainless steel water bowl and holder off the cage, spilling the water into the tray below. It was no big deal, I just fixed the bowl and got him some more water. But if he had done this while, for example, I was taking a small day trip to Michigan, where I might be gone 8 hours or more, let alone if I was gone for the whole week, things could've gone very badly very quickly.

I agree... I would have someone come check on them at the very least once per day. I do think it would be ok to let them stay at a friends house though, they would enjoy the company while you are away. That was so nice of you to rescue them from that situation and give them a loving home.

Thank you all for your quick replies and good advice! Yes, I was very leary about leaving them alone that long, eventhough planned for food/water. No, I don't leave them outside unsupervised..They sit on a table undercover on patio right outside my glass door, and come in if I have to step out, etc.. I can see and hear them at all times. Yes! The story about hawk is one that can happen, and does happen!! I used to live in the country with wooded area around back yard...I had a big barrel fish pond with siamese fighter fish & gold fish under a covered deck...One day big goldfish was gone...I believe it was the big crows (very smart birds) that got it, as they cared not about my dogs running all over the place! Yikes! Had to screen cover my pond!

A funny thing to watch is when I have the budgies on the patio...I feed hummingbirds, and sometimes they come right up to the cage and hover...my babies are amazed & just sit there real still, like, "what is that"?! It's cute!!

I think I will have to go with my cousin keeping them. It will be somewhat of a hassle, for various reasons, but they will love them & her 12 yr old daughter is begging me to bring them. She wants some budgies, but I am trying to talk her mom out of it, because they are more care than most peeps think, eventhough not labor intensive...This would be a good lesson for them to think twice about getting birds. I think I will also check with my vet, hopefully, boarding them there would not be as expensive as for my dogs; I have checked about home visits with sitters, but visits are the same price as for my doggies, about same as boarding, etc..

Again, Thanks to All for your feedback, and helping me to make a good decision! (Guess some thought I was kinda dumb, since I had a lot of experience with wild birds, etc..?! I just needed to hear from all you experienced "pet" bird experts! When I had my budgies growing up, I never left them for vacation, that I can remember. And, I never could leave my wild/rehab birds alone, etc.)

Kind regards!!
