Hi I am getting a Hahns macaw in two weeks, I have bird experience and am just looking for a little extra information on them, I have never met one in person!

Waiting for the DNA results, but his or her name is going to be Phoenix!

Congrats! I have always thought Hahn's macaws are so cool! All I know is that they can be nippy. Yay, someone finally took the name Phoenix! :dance5:

Phoenix is absolutely adorable!!! I just love Hahn's Macaws. I handfed one many years ago, she was a real cutie. They have adorable voices (the ones that decide to talk). Congrats on your baby!

Paddington has never nipped us either (the closest he got was clamping down on my hubby's finger one time when he got caught on a toy on his climbing net). He's a really sweet bird who just loves spending as much time as he possibly can with us.

Welcome,

What a cutie. Do you have hand feeding formula and a syringe ready just in case this little baby needs some comfort food?

My Max is as nippy as most Hahn's are reputed to be. He usually says "watch out" before he does it, though. And he only seems to do it when he's agitated or upset--this is usually when I come home from a long day at work, and he has not been out as much as he'd like. Otherwise, he's a sweetie, and he's an incredible talker--not the clearest in the world, but a big vocabulary and a lot of expression in it! :D He is my

Congrats on your new baby; you will love having him.

I do not have hand feeding supplies or anything and don't know how to do it, but he is suppose to be weaned, and if he needs to be I have a friend who has handfed birds and can help me.

I don't mind nippiness as long as he is full of personality!

If he is fully weaned, (how old?) don't continue to feed formula. You can give a "comfort feeding" with some [John recommends] warm oatmeal & pellets or [Tiki likes....] brown rice & chopped beans with a little veggie stock or warmed pasta & feed with a spoon in a quiet place. Mostly when Tiki is "acting like a baby," which she does every few days at this age, I just give her some dedicated cuddle time for about 5 minutes at a time in between "step ups" & other little "tricks" over the course of maybe 30 minutes. I try not to just sit for ages with her snuggling without in some way making her work for it...even though it can be hard!

Congrats on your new baby!

Tiki, my Hahns, is 4 months old. I don't know what people define as a "nip." I would say I receive several "nips" a day, but have never been biten. ....kinda mincing words, I know. She's sweet, playful, loves kisses, loves tickles, would rather be rewarded with praise & attention than any type of treat. She's also stubborn & a bit shy & timid when it comes to trying new things. She does well with new people, but can react poorly to being around too much activity like loud people & animals...she can either button up & want mommy or daddy only or get squawky & nippy to try to keep up with all the action!

You're going to love Phoenix! They're such wonderful birds. :) CONGRATS again!
