When I made Dusty's outdoor "sunroom" I scrubbed the wire down with full strength vinegar using a brass brissle brush, the kind you use to clean rust off metal. This is to scratch off excess zinc and any little tags of zinc or metal that your bird might nibble off. You can also put perches, swings and ropes in the cage so the bird/s can navigate about the cage without having to climb the wire.This reduces the contact and opportunity to get the stuff into the bird. You can also paint the wire with acrylic house paint to seal the wire. Once dry the paint is not toxic to the birds. This is what I did also.
