Essential Oil diffuser outdoors

Hello again!

I've been doing research lately on essential oil diffusers since I'm trying to find a way to repel mosquitoes in the evenings when sitting outside on the porch. I read that citronella oil can help repel mosquitoes, and I'd prefer that over having to apply OFF spray to my skin every time I want to be outside.
However, I've also read that essential oil diffusers are dangerous to birds.

My question is: is it safe to use outside on the porch if my bird is located inside (albeit in the first room as you enter)? Would it be preferable simply to use OFF mosquito repellant and just wash it off when coming back inside?

I was looking at these specifically, in case it matters:

Is your porch enclosed? Screen or glass? I'm not sure how effective a diffuser would be if used out in the open.

Here is a thread from yesterday that has some good alternatives.

Thanks! That thread answers some of my questions :)

The porch is not enclosed. I opted for just a deet-free mosquito spray since we needed it short-notice. It will only be used outdoors and we'll wash properly before going into the bird's room and that should be good enough I think.
