Hello. I’m not a cockatoo mom (yet) but will most likely be inheriting one. I know Sugar the citron crested cockatoo only from caring for her in her owner’s absence and she was extremely sweet and interactive with me. I have never had a parrot of my own but have cared for many them in my work as a pet sitter. I’m here to learn all I can, get input and advice and information on how best to care for her (who might actually be a him I’m told) While I have cared for other parrots I can not touch or get too close to, sugar was hand raised by her owner (who has since passed) and is very responsive, inquisitive, shakes my hand, waves hello at me, seeks out my attention and talks a bit to me. I adore her(him) and am both excited and anxious to bring sugar into my home. I think her screeching is the only thing I’m nervous about, though my neighbor has a very loud severe macaw next door that we are all used to. What should I expect? What is your best advice and input for a first time “too” mom? Thank you so much for listening and for any advice you may have to offer.

Welcome to the forum Rebecca :fairy2:

Very good of you to open your home to Sugar, how sad her owner passed. Worth noting, some birds mourn the loss of their owners.

Getting Sugar sexed at her first vet appointment could help you.

Here´s a link to the Cockatoo forums, there are plenty of threads packed full of information. Cockatoo Causeway | Avian Avenue Parrot Forum If you don´t find what you are looking for you can always start new threads :)

(I´m sure other members can help you with the ¨what to expect¨, but I do not have a Too in my home)

Lots of foraging opportunities, lots of toys!!!! Sounds like Sugar is already an amazing bird that just needs a good home to settle into! :) I've had the opportunity to adopt 2 of them, and one it really hurt to say no to! But I'm honestly glad that he eventually found a home!

Welcome! Thanks for taking in Sugar. 'Toos are busy, intelligent and destructive. Lots of toys. Guard the woodwork in your house ( I learned the hard way). And then the usual parrot stuff- no Teflon pans, air fresheners, candles, etc. And what is her diet like?

Congrats of the upcoming addition of Sugar!

Now...sit down, buckle up...because it's going to be a crazy ride!

Patience, the ability to think "outside the box" ( in other words, flexibility), and a sense of humor (yes, a sense of humor) are all large assets when you live with a 'too. ;) Keep digging for as much information as you can...from as many sources as you can find....although take with caution info you see on the internet. (a wise precaution for any topic ;)) Remember, we all make mistakes along the way...all you want to do is minimize the amount of mistakes. :yes3:

You've landed in an EXCELLENT place for information...please go to "Cockatoo Causeway" and read the posts. If you have questions, comments, whatever...don't be afraid to post them...even if it seems like it's something "small". Now that you're here, you've got all of us as resources...and one or more of us "too-owned" people have probably come up with a question or situation you're asking about....it's funny how that happens so often.

On a personal note...out first 'too was Cassie...she was a Lesser Sulfur...a related species to the Citron. She became my "heart" bird...and obviously is the reason for my Username. When you go into Cockatoo Causeway, you will, without doubt, come across many posts about our current King of the House, Milton. :)

Again, Welcome to the Avenue...and we'll be looking forward to hearing from you about Sugar...:)

Hello and welcome to AA, and Welcome to your too!
I won't lie, too's love to scream. I've have a hand full of them. A mitchell and a sulfer, I owned, several others came and went as rescues, and placed in good homes.
Too's are very inquisitive, very intelligent, and very independent. Take these away and you have a miserable too. I let them be themselfs, never caged them, though they understood their cage and sleep times when I set the routine.
Consistency of routine is a good training tool.
But it's up to you to keep and maintain it. All to often I find people don't stick to the basic routine. Birds understand when breakfast time is, they know when bath time at certain time ofday, or if I get spray bottle out and put in bathroom.
They know daddy time, they know tv time, and etc...you break this routine, they know and will scream. Plain and simple. The less you deviate from a plan or routine, the less screaming you'll have.
Toys, Too's love to keep busy, investigate things, and yes get into things. Don't be afraid to place a giant tub of toys in a box on floor. Too's go nuts searching their box for the one toy they want to play with. Foraging for toys I call it.
Music, too's love their music, especially if it has a Good beat to it.
Screams are usually a nature of hey where are you type of scream. But then, the biggest thing is, they just like the sound of their voice.
You'll never stop a too from screaming once in a while, so might as well cross any idea you have that you think might remedy it.....won't happen.
Enjoy your too and welcome. It's a fun ride!
