Spending a lot of time researching throughout the years to find the perfect breed of bird for me and my family i have come to a top 3 list and number 2 on that list is caiques. I have a ton of reasons that I just LOVE them i cant list them all as the list could go on for a while but ill list a couple. They are generally very social birds, have a big personality, they are just generally happy birds, and they are very handleable. This is what i have gathered from caiques but the raeason im calling on people who own them is so that they can share their experiences with their caiques and can let me know if what i said about them is ture or not please let me know cause this is on my list for birds to look at and research even more.

They're usually really good at responding to tags, they'll probably pop in with an info bomb. They're super knowledgeable :)

When someone uses a tag, it's to bring that person to the thread. So messaging them is not necessary as they already get a notification :)

Caiques are on my list of birds I will never have

They have way too much energy for me.

They're wonderful birds, but they need a play stand and lots of toys to keep them busy. They're not the type of bird who can just chill on your shoulder for hours. They like to wrestle and play, and occasionally can get a little rough. They're also kinda crazy, and can be hard to predict until you get to know them.

I love my caique to death. We put her on a play stand while we're watching TV and she mocks the characters laughing, crying, and even their tone of voice (while saying nonsense). She has a sense of humor, and will laugh at us and other birds when we do something she finds funny. She's not a great talker, but can say a few words. When she wants something she will just repeat "step up" over and over until we figure out what she wants. She also plucks and self-mutilates her legs, and she's currently in a neck collar. She loves us and almost never bites us, though she will scream or growl at us if we displease her. We can't let strangers around her because she will go out of her way to attack them.

In conclusion: very amusing, smart, crazy, stubborn, and loving with boundless energy.

Theres quite a lot of posts here abouit caiques, and I suggest you read the good bad and ugly about caiques

All the good things you read about caiques are true, and the bad things are also true. One poster has already stated that his bird mutilates itself.

These birds are funny, interesting loveable, challenging, frustrating and distructive.

IMHO they should not be kept singly, and need as much space to move about as you do.

I have green thighed caiques, a very rare breed and quite valuable, so I dont post lots of physical information on line.

I have converted a large double garage to use as an avairy, removing most of the roof and replacing it with see through perspex. The floor is concrete and easily hosed down every few days. There are two doorways to this space, one internal and one external. Both are netted off and opening them creates a cooling breeze in the midday heat of Africa where I live.

Inside that free flying space I have a half dozen full sized ( you can stand up in them) cages, one per pair basically. Multiple branches and perches hang from the avairy roof, well above human reach where the birds feel safe and happy. ( though they are very tame)

There are branches everywhere, these birds are climbers and chewers. Every sunny day ( almost every day in Africa) some of the birds are out on the front lawn in smaller cages enjoying the sun and shouting at wild birds. They are rainforest birds so they get misted almost every day, out on the lawn.

They have to be kept busy, VERY BUSY, and stimulated or problems arise quickly.

Stop thinking about a parrot and think of an eagle instead. How much room does your pet eagle need?

Thank you for the compliment. Its easy to sit back and accept compliments but its more important to explain HOW IT IS DONE

These birds are not an 'add-on' to my ( our) home life like a tv set that you can swirch on and off.

My partner is also involved as a care giver and the birds are FULLY INTEGRATED into our lives.

ALL decisions involve a bird component. Are we going out? maybe. Are the birds fed?. If we are delayed do they have lots of food and clean water?

Can we paint the house?. NO. Not until all birds are at a safe distance for a week

Are we going away on holidays? NO. WE are not going anywhere. I will go first then you go when I get back. Someone we both trust has to mind the babies.

This level of integration is rewarded handsomely by a wonderful flock of happy playful birdies. It is VERY satisfing but its not for everyone.

I fully understand that parrots are a huge comitment but i might have just stored caiques at the end of my top three i dont want to go get a bird that i can not keep very busy all the time and make it stressed and aggrivated maybe ill stick with cocktiels for now
