I posted this in the Amazon section but thought I would post it here too to see if I get more responses and I added the poll. If not allowed please delete :bathtime:

Hi all! It’s been a while since I have been on the forum, I hope everyone is doing great! :grouphug3:
I was thinking about water sprayers and would love to get y’all’s opinions. Should we be using food safe or at least a glass bottom sprayer for bath time? We are all becoming more and more aware of how toxic things are around us. Is it worth being concerned about since his whole body is being sprayed, then he prunes those feathers?
Paco’s vision has gotten progressively worse over the years to the point where I believe he only sees shadows and shapes relying mostly on his hearing and spacial memory. Bath time has always been something I have struggled with with him. Spraying him in the cage means he will try to run away from the water and walk straight off a short perch. But when he is in the bathroom lately the harsh lighting casts shadows that frighten him.
Does anyone else have experience with vision impaired birds? Do you use a food safe spray bottle? Do you think it’s even something worth being concerned about? Thanks in advance! ❤

I really do not think that it matters, however I would never risk using a glass spray bottle around a large parrot. My biggest trepidation with it is that if they ever lunged, and the bottle were to drop, it would shatter. That would be a risk to myself and the bird/birds.

That’s a good thought!

I use a plastic sprayer which is a fine mist spray that hair dressers use - very cheap online, mostly silent, and the fine mist is less intimidating to some birds.

i recommend to let them bath in a big bowl instead since some sprays are super risky to use! but however if you want to use sprays i recommend a plastic sprayer

TBH I don't think that using a food safe spray bottle really matters. Atleast in my US based manufacturing experience, "food safe" bottles and general-purpose bottles come from oftentimes the same manufacturing plant using the same plastic. Toxins leeching into what's put into the container typically isn't a massive concern until contents reach a certain temperature or are exposed to microwaves and radiation. Wash the bottle and you should be okay! I'd stay away from glass spray bottles/misters due to the reasons stated from Expressmailtome.

As for Amazons that are a struggle to bathe, here are a couple tips! I have several Amazons that are like this.

-Fine misters tend to be less intimidating than spray bottle streams. I HIGHLY recommend ExtremeMist's High-Performance Bird Mister. I use this with my own birds, and it has an auto spray function that SAVES my arms! The company also offers a lifetime warranty for replacing defective bottles that they're really good about honoring- no questions asked.

-Sometimes spraying them OUTSIDE of the cage or on a designated stand with a water dish can encourage them to bathe. Some need both the spray and a dish to bathe.

-Change your water temperature! Sometimes mine are more inclined to bathe when I give them water of a different temperature than usual.

-LIFECHANGING advice I received is to run the vacuum while you spray! I don't know why it works, but it does. It might take a few times, but this is such a weird hack that I recommend to everyone who have birds that are bad about bathing! When my vacuum turns on, my birds expect bathtime! If I don't get to them fast enough with the mister, they'll start bathing in their water bowls!

-Lastly, give treats or cuddles after/during bathtime so they start to associate it with good things!

Hope this helps! :)

I use a spray bottle meant for plants.

I know that there used to be at least a few members here who used battery powered spray bottles, and another who used something along the lines of you prime it, and then it sprays the entire bottle. They found it easier than squeezing repeatedly for as long as their birds desired their bath to last.

I had forgotten about them. They filmed their YouTube video in our store, and that's me spraying down the birds. You can see Sandy in there getting misted. They sold really well.

ThanKs for reminding me that C4 hasn't had her plastic spray bottle bath in a few days. The temperature recently plunged into the fifties so I didn't want my hand to get cold...ahhh, or C4 catch a chill. Anyway, I told her it was your fault she's getting a spray bath so watch out for an angry bird attack. You've been warned! :cag:

So I ordered the ExtremeMist's High-Performance Bird Mister and tried it out on C4 this morning. She likes it even less than her cheap plastic spray bottle. I like the new bird mister so I'll continue using it and maybe one day she'll learn to like it too. :cag:
