Will is my 35-40 yr old Blue Crown Conure I took in less than a year ago.
It came on suddenly yesterday. I got him to an avian vet but I am looking for help, info, prayers from others.

In the morning, He was doing some head bobbing while I was playing on the floor with Sunny and Jimi. I thought maybe he was excited. Then he did not take a bath per usual when I vacuumed. A few hours later, he was on the cage floor. He had not eaten, poops only urine. Still some head bobbing/once regurg. Listless.

In house blood work showed all organs fine. Waiting for white blood cell count this morning. Could not do fecal as only urine available. He was dehydrated so they injected some fluids. Started on antibiotic.
XRay showed enlarged heart, though. No apparant digestive blockages.

I guess treatment options aren't too great for heart disease. Anybody have experience?
Would heart trouble really cause the head bobbing, lack of appetite?

He just will not eat for me. even favorite sunflower seeds and peanuts. It does not help that he doesn't like people or to be handled.
How long can he go without eating? I even moistened 2 types of pellets last night and put small pieces into his beak. Spit them out. Any ideas?

He is still with us this morning, but too dark in the room to be at him much yet. Will try water and food again.
I wish he liked people or physical contact with my other birds so I/we could be some comfort to him. He likes having his flock around though.

I would get him back to the vets so they can tube feed him until they figure out what's wrong. Is it an avian vet?

Yes, an avian vet. Thursday, today, is her day off but she said she'll come back in if needed.
I was going to ask about tube feeding as he'll probably have to go back for fluids.
They will call with white blood cell results this morning.
Oh - also FYI I have my avitech heat panel on him.

Well, he did just take a drink for me, so I'm thrilled.
He tried one sunflower seed and ground up a pellet (didn't eat it) but food is still not a good thing for him, he says.
Gotta go get everybody their breakfast, then give him his antibiotic dose.

I hope Will is soon feeling better. If he continues to not eat or drink he needs to go in. I am glad you got him to the vets and have heat on him. I will keep him in my prayers.:hug8:

I'm soo sorry.. :sadhug: When Mikey was sick with MRSA and would not eat his pellets/seeds; he would eat oatmeal.. nice, soft warm comfort food.. Perhaps Will would like oatmeal as well.. :hug8: I am praying for your baby.. :hug8:

Can you try giving him soup or juice? Something to give him more nutrition than water. He does need fluid but he will need energy food too. If he doesn't eat, I would take him back in & have them give him IV fluids again. He won't last long if he doesn't eat. I hope he recovers! :hug8:

It depends on what variety of heart disease Will has as to how it will be treated. Jasper my 18 yo GW female has CHF (congestive heart failure and a greatly enlarged left ventricle). She has been treated for 12 years with Benazipril, Metacam and a heart tonic developed by Dr. Wissman. Occasionally, when I can see she is accumulating fluids, she gets furosomide for a couple of days.

He will need a very fat free diet - no peanuts or sunflower. How about pieces of almond or pistachio?

And yes he needs gavage feeding.

Thankyou all for advice and good thoughts. HankMacaw - I am comforted to hear Jasper is treated successfully. I'm afraid I spaced out a bit and didn't really hear if it is congestive heart failure or what specifically. I'll have to ask today.
It is so hard waiting to hear back from the vet office as to results of the White blood cells and if we can do any gavage feeding.
I finally managed to tempt Will with some Birdy Bread and corn bread and held Jimi in front of his cage eating. So he will at least eat a little bit. What a relief, but he is by no means really feeling better.

Best wishes for Will's recovery:hug8::hug8:

When my Grey was sick and not eating enough the vet did tube feed her some hand feeding formula.
