A buddy of mine, who knows how much I've been struggling after the loss of my beloved Sam, has just brought to my attention that a local herp enthusiast is trying to find a home for a leopard gecko with severe Enigma Syndrome. Since I have experience with special needs reptiles, have always loved geckos, and have cared for other species with neurological issues, he wants me to meet her.

I'm on the fence since I'm still grieving and don't want to jump into a rash decision, but you all know how weak I am to any animal in need. And that I'm a sucker.

I guess I'm just thinking out loud.

She certainly is beautiful.

Aww. Sorry for your loss :'( It would be good for you to help out that poor gecko. It might help you cope through your grief.

I didn't know you lost a gecko, I'm so sorry. I have owned green anoles in the past as a kid and I loved them. I'm just researching leopard geckos and bearded dragons etc as I'm going to Repticon with a friend this weekend. I say go with what your heart says but do not feel guilty for getting another gecko too soon or something like that. Everyone heals differently and if putting your energy into helping the new gecko feel better then I say go for it!!

You've got a big heart and there's nothing wrong with that. :) If you feel up to helping this sweet little thing, then go for it. There's no right or wrong answer for "how long do I wait?". Sometimes a little one in need helps heal a wounded heart.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

She's adorable. :swoon: I didn't know you'd lost your Sam; I'm very sorry to hear that. :(

I don't know what Enigma Syndrome is, but I have a feeling that the two of you will be very good for one another.

Samskeyti was my ball python. She was special needs and required incredibly intensive specialised care, so I've been feeling very lost and hollow now that she's gone.

Enigma Syndrome is a genetically inherited neurological disorder that affects movement and balance. It ranges in severity, but can involve star gazing (head stuck back and staring upwards), circling, rolling onto their backs and being unable to get back up, disorientation, and seizures. The worst of the worst can involve all the above.

Looking after them largely entails having a setup that prevents them from climbing (and subsequently falling), providing assisted feedings because they often can't chase or catch their own prey, and keeping stress down as best as possible.

On my way to meet her and made a friendo at the train station!

Very bold youngin. She actually came right up to me, but I didn't get pictures of her up close because I didn't want to scare her and get my butt whooped by 11 pounds of waterfowl fury.

My mother used to worked at the Tech Centre in Detroit and at the reflection pool they would get 100s of Canadian geese and also a pair of swans. It was really cool. All the birds were very jaded and would beg for snacks.

The swans would have their chicks there yearly too, which was super cool.

Yay! Congratulations :)

I have a baby gecko (marbled I think) living in my new bedroom. I see it from time to time so I am extra careful when moving anything in there.
We also found that a baby skink has made itself at home in our laundry cupboard so I’ve made it so there’s nothing in that cupboard that anyone needs to get so I am the only one that will be going in that cupboard. My family put up with my weird ways, if they find them in the house they catch them and put them outside...I leave them to do their own thing unless they will be in danger.
I don’t actually have reptiles as pets (I did as a kid for a while) but they are welcome to stay where they are as long as they like.
We were told that there’s a big blue tongue lizard living in our garden somewhere so I hope my dogs haven’t annoyed him and made him move on....I haven’t seen him yet.

I found this beautiful girl in my garden a few years back. She was such a gorgeous blue tongue. At my current house we have a water-dragon in the garden. She is fun to watch.

This little girl is so gall-darn cute. I offered her a meal today, since her old owner hadn't fed her in the 48 hours before I got her, and (as I seem to have temporarily lost my feeding tongs) I was going the brave route and using my fingers. She considered the mealworms I held for her, then the crickets, and even the hornworm, but she decided that she wasn't hungry, and instead climbed onto my hand and fell fast asleep on my wrist.

Most of my gecko experience is with the hands-off, aggressive arboreals like Tokays, so having her climb right up onto me was a bit shocking, but outrageously precious. Her enclosure was already set up before she got here and the temps are perfect, so I don't think she was seeking heat; maybe I'm just comfortable? :D

It's abundantly clear that she has a more severe case of Enigma Syndrome than I've ever seen before. She struggles with a lot of tasks that the average Leo wouldn't think twice about, but she's nothing if not determined. Such a tenacious little thing! Ain't nothing going to stand in her way.
