I had suspected that Major did not hear that well when we got him 4 years ago. The last year or so it has gotten to the point now that he can only hear loud percussion noises. I tested it a number of times. Coming up and standing behind him and calling him. Even if he does not look his ears do not move.

Laying in the hallway sleeping. I come up to him with a spoon and a cup. Clink the spoon on the cup from a foot away. He does not wake up. His ears do not move. Age related hearing loss. Not much we can do.

If you did not "know" him you would never be able to tell he can't hear. He compensates by watching everything like a hawk. He takes commands through the eyes and gestures.

I love my dog. :)

He makes up for the loss with his other senses? Sight and vibration.

Always difficult when they become older, Frog who is in doggie heaven went deaf around 12 years of age and was partially blind he lived until 18. He watched everything, I only had to do hand movements and he new what I wanted or needed from him, they do rely so much on other senses quite amazing. He was an awesome boy.

Major is one handsome man... Don't tell Brutus I gave a compliment to another doggie. :D

He can't hear but I don't know any other dogs that can still hit 35km/hr at 14 years old. I can attribute a lot of my fitness to this old boy. Best trainer ever. :)

With my border collie getting up in her years as well, it makes me glad that I trained her with vocals and hand signals. Hopefully it helps when she ages as well.

Major, you are a handsome fellow!

This might be a dumb question but would he respond to vibration...like when you have a cell phone on silence with vibration alert on.
He is a smart, handsome companion.

Major is indeed a handsome boy.

Since Border Collies are a herding breed it is very common for them to learn to respond to hand signals.

Yes! So this is probably the best dog to lose hearing.
And he is very beautiful. ♥

Aww, our old guy Leo has gone deaf. But it works out for him during food raids.

I have a deaf dog...A two year old Aussie shepherd. She was born deaf though. She learned hand signals and body language so fast. No doubt your pup (regardless of age I call them all pups lol) has been learning signals we don't even think about. They're so very smart.
