How often for vet checks?

My dog goes in for his shots twice a year and his vet check. He gets weighed monthly too at the vet. My birds don't go in unless sick. I do have a microscope and slides and do some checks myself which I learned from a vet assistant long ago. We haven't had anything in the way of illnesses in 25 years which I couldn't handle myself.

How do they take the blood? I watched a video on youtube that freaked me out. The vet took the blood from the chest area.

My vet clipped my little guy's nail short and did Psitticosis & the CBC with blood from the nail.
