Baby is doing very well. Never stops moving. Like a little wrestler lol.

Papa devouring handfeeding websites and discovered, - after 5 nights of broken sleep - that even a one day old chick can be given a last feed at 10pm.

If the mix is thick enough.

Good news. Papa won't be walking into glass doors this week...

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwsome. NIK NAK is going to give Thumper Fuzz butt and Num Nums a run for the money in the cutest most spoiled bird department.

We raised a baby female house finch we rescued from a crow and she could sleep all night without issues once topped off before bed. She bonded and grew up a happy flying flea around here so with some good parenting and a little luck you should be fine

Baby update day 7. Technically 6.5 days old. He hatched at 11.30pm last Sunday.

Very very squirming and active. This is not because he is cold. he does this in the incubator too. Wanders off all over the place

AND his eyes arent open yet lol

And neither are Papa's at 3.30am for the morning feeding. you can see some dried food on babys back. Ill apply some warm later and gently ease it off with a cotton bud.

Anyway Ive greatly increased the consistency of babys food and he is sleeping much longer.
Bck to work tomorrow so I will feed him late and let him wait till 6am for his morning feed

Heard peeping from the incubator. But I just checked ten minutes ago, his crop is half full?

Looked in. Baby climbing out of his little dish. Eyes still sealed shut. Quite determined.

Is this a sign of things to come,?

Ok papa grabbed the nettle and didn't feed baby through the night

Last feed 10pm - quite a solid feed

Woke up at 6. Baby still fine. Stuffed him with food and off to work we go

At last - Papa gets some serious shut eye overnight

Great tip on the net for handfeeding chicks.

The big problem is always getting the temperature right for those tiny sensitive babies

Put cold food mix in syringe
Place syringe in pot of hot water, and allow water to cool
When the water cools to the right temp, the syringe and contents has too!
One quick test on back of hand, mix should feel slightly warmer than the human 37C
...and off you go to feed baby

Suspending body weight from his head to straighten the neck ( you KNOW youve seen adult birds suspend their entire body weight from that head and neck)
gently squeezing out drops of mix onto the beak till you get the bobbing response
then feed slowly, dont squirt the feed down his lungs
In 5 days my chick was grabbing for the syringe lol

Baby is ten days old, in an incubator, hiding under papas desk at work

Mama laid again last night.........



Sharing a one bedroom flat with 3 caiques. two of them hormonal, the other a wildly adventurous, high powered juvenile, dizzy with her fantastic energy and flying ability.

Papa thinks he should be hatching all eggs. Mama disagrees. The bickering started again this morning

....sometimes its nice to get away to a calm project office lol
