Revolution  and even Advantage Multi topical heartworm treatment create big sores on one of my cat's skin. So I got a 6 pack of Interceptor tablets but they are GIGANTIC (meant for dogs but also do for cats). The vet nurse said crush 'em but  i forgot to ask her how do you crush rock hard pills????? Anyone?

So I'm guessing that you don't have a mortar and pestle :p Place pill in plastic pint bag (freezer quality best) take hammer... you get the idea :)

I'd use a hammer, but... Isn't there a cat version? I would think the dose of meds in a dog version would be too much for a cat, and even a dog and cat of the same weight don't necessarily get the same dose of the same medication.

I have used Sentinel (which is Interceptor and Program together) ever since it came out over 10yrs or so. It is canine only.

One other option is Heartgard, a beef flavored chewable - however it is jinormus :) compared to the size of the Interceptor pill. If your cat doesn't like the way it tastes - thats a lot of pill to get down.

you can buy a pill crusher in the pharmacys. other then that the plastic bag works just watch that the hammer doesnt damage the bag to much and all the pill spills out.

As long as you weigh the pill first you can powderize them in a blender or a coffee grinder and then give the same amount of powder. Or you could just do one pill at a time I guess.

Heartworms are so very rare in cats. Did your vet inform you of the percentage of cats who get heartworms? I worked for two vet hospitals for 6 years before opening my pet spa business and we never had one heartworm positive cat. Not enough to make me want to give them heartworm preventative, especially a med that causes problems. Just my opinion/experience.
