I think everyone who is a regular here cares tremendously about meeting their birds' needs. I'm just in the fortunate position that if I decide that means filling up a quarter of my living room with an aviary there's no one to veto that. (Although I did get some funny looks from maintenance. The relieved, "oh, it's for your birds" made me wonder what they thought it was for.)

I've also been really fortunate to be able to learn from you all. I can't even imagine how frustrating it is to the veterans to see for what feels like the millionth time "every time I grab my bird he bites me. How should I punish him so he stops biting me?" But you all keep wading in to help us understand that the birds are who they are. If we want change, we need to start with changing how we interact with them. And, having flighted, aviary birds keeps me honest. If there's something I want them to do, I can only ask.

Mustrum and Esme would also like to chime and say that training me is an on-going process, and really hard work, but that it's worth it. (I just opened up a 5 lb box of millet - that's way more millet than I thought it would be - so they can see that their training is paying dividends)

I'm not sure this is exactly what I had in mind when I decided to invite a pair of parakeets to join my quaran-team, but it's certainly brought me a great deal of enjoyment (and a lot of millet hulls crunching underfoot).
