What to do with dowel rods

Can't say for sure - I probably would. Just to be on the safe side. I bet you can still make use of it for chew toys though.

I'm not sure that's safe, but I have seen people just sand them unevenly so they are like normal branches. You can also make toys out of them (or even a ladder).

I was just about to mention using a sander to make it an irregular surface if that's what you're aiming for.

Cool idea.

Another thing you can do it cut into 12-20cm (depending on the bird) pieces and then drill about 4 holes through to make toy bases.

I have also used a dowel to tie a pepper plant to to keep it upright - not bird related but still a useful thing.

They also work well for making ladders if they’re cut into sections and drilled.
I use them in places that Burt doesn’t use much.
They’re only a problem when they’re the only or main perch!

maybe put it on the outside ! so it doesn't go to waste and you can thoroughly monitor him
