You just get a knife and peel into little scale-like things.

I haven't thought about that, but thankfully, Crouton sits on the perch above it and chews on it. Should i take it out of his cage?

I'm not sure that's safe, but I have seen people just sand them unevenly so they are like normal branches. You can also make toys out of them (or even a ladder).

I was just about to mention using a sander to make it an irregular surface if that's what you're aiming for.

Also this topic of dowels, I use them as rigging to hang toys and suspended perches...

Oh that's a great idea! I've got so many useless dowels; might try that out.

Cool idea.

Another thing you can do it cut into 12-20cm (depending on the bird) pieces and then drill about 4 holes through to make toy bases.

I have also used a dowel to tie a pepper plant to to keep it upright :D - not bird related but still a useful thing.

They also work well for making ladders if they’re cut into sections and drilled.
I use them in places that Burt doesn’t use much.
They’re only a problem when they’re the only or main perch!

Great ideas! I took it out, I also made the other two dowels more natural-looking.
