Martins are in the swallow family, aren't they? The beak shape says insectivore and small seeds, the aerodynamic shape of the head, wings and body say flast flyer and the long tapering wings and tail say acrobatic as well a flyer that spends a lot of time in the air. Usually this this adds up to a swallow or swift or, in this case, a martin. I have only ever seen a purple martin and that one was in an aviary.

Very, very cute. The park district I work for has a small lake (Lake Arlington, Arlington Heights, IL) and they have martins nesting there in summer. The one problem is that those cute little birds have a tendency to dive-bomb the walkers/bicyclers going by since the paths are very close, if not right next, to the nests. It's got to the point where the AHPD has put up signs warning park patrons to beware of the birds.

I'm so glad those birds are there, rather than here in PA. If they were here, the Legislature and governor would enact laws to say the birds were "pests" and "dangerous" to the citizens. Then they'd have a reason to round the birds up and kill them.
If anyone thinks I'm overreacting- think of what they do to Quakers here- AND what they tried to do with Nanday conures... :(

So cute! :xflove:
Why is it perching on you? Is it injured, a pet, or a baby?

I looked at the photos again this morning and realized what the second photo reminded me of - Stitch from Lilo & Stitch.
